A bit daft or a good turn of phrase?

Emma Watson has described herself as this, she means she is single.Aibu to think shes being a bit daft or do you think it's a good thing shes described herself in this way because shes more than happy to be alone.

We are very lucky to have women like Emma Watson that are showing young girls and women that you can be perfectly happy and successful without being in a relationship or even needing one. I did not have role models like this when I was young, and wish I had. EW is a brilliant role model, and however she feels she wants to express her independence is fine with me.

She is probably sick of everyone asking her about it TBF

PrincessHoneysuckle · 05/11/2019 08:14

@autumn i agree it was the description of it that I thought was a bit pretentious

It's an awful phrase - really pretentious - if someone told me they were "self partnered" I'd honestly think they were a tosser

GruciusMalfoy · 05/11/2019 08:19

The wording is daft, but I understand why shes done it. It's a much stronger statement than "happily single". Which many people don't seem to believe us possible.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 05/11/2019 08:20

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted me too! Awful

It's a bit like Gwyneth and her "conscious uncoupling".

Emma Watson is a great role model for young women. Far better than some vacuous reality star or vlogger.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 05/11/2019 08:31

I read it as a bit tongue in cheek.

She doesn't come across as pretentious (a la Gwyneth) or taking herself too seriously.

greenlobster · 05/11/2019 08:33

Sounds like a term for masturbation tbh.

rainbowconfetti · 05/11/2019 08:39

It's tearing, unnecessary and attention seeking crap.

She is single.

rainbowconfetti · 05/11/2019 08:39

Tearing = TWATISH

PookieDo · 05/11/2019 08:43

No I agree that she is making a point rather than saying ‘happily single’ because people never believe this can be true! Trust me.

I think she is intelligent and has the type of SOH to be saying this with an element of tongue in cheek.

StoatofDisarray · 05/11/2019 08:46

Slightly off topic here but I wanted to draw attention to the Gwyneth Paltrow advert for Giogiro Armani's Si perfume, which includes the line "Si to myself".

The expression is a bit off but I know many, many singles who live busy interesting, fun lives with lots of friends, hobbies and excitement and don’t want the commitment of a ltr. I think recent research has shown a huge rise in the amount of singletons in society. I assume this is an attempt to positively describe the above?

senua · 05/11/2019 08:52

I don't like the phrase because it implies that everyone has to be partnered. What's wrong with saying "i'm not partnered at the moment and I'm fine with that"?

It also sounds a bit narcissistic.

wondering7777 · 05/11/2019 08:54

This is going to be the new “conscious uncoupling”. It’ll be referenced in countless magazine articles until we’re all thoroughly sick of it!

Mirroredbox · 05/11/2019 08:54

Aren’t the media desperate to pair her off and if she is ever seen in public with a male they are “dating?” There was an article about her and a “mystery man” under a week ago. She’s probably annoyed about the article and reacting to it.

PookieDo · 05/11/2019 08:55

You could take this as:

Seen as everyone is so interested in my love life and paps follow me around and link me to every man I talk to I am going to tell them that I am ‘self partnered’ and make them talk about that instead

I swear I saw some article about her the other day where a pap had taken a photo of her kissing a bloke and the caption was ‘Emma’s mystery man’. I honestly think none of us can appreciate how annoying and difficult this kind of intrusion is for young women. She’s not a ‘celeb’ she’s an actress

PookieDo · 05/11/2019 08:56

Haha cross posted @Mirroredbox

Mirroredbox · 05/11/2019 09:30

Smile thinking the same thing Pookie!

midnightmisssuki · 05/11/2019 09:49

Is it just being ‘single’? Good fucking god - seems there has to be a cool Phrase for everything these days 🤷🏻‍♀️

Happyspud · 05/11/2019 09:52

Sounds like another but better way to say she is single. Single implies ‘without someone’. Self partnered implies nobody else involved or missing.

People are too quick to shit on change without actually thinking why.

SerenDippitty · 05/11/2019 10:01

What’s wrong with partnerfree if childfree is fine to describe those who don’t have children by choice?

SoupDragon · 05/11/2019 10:03

It's a much stronger statement than "happily single".

I agree. Single kind of implies you're looking for someone whereas "self partnered" sounds like you are happy not being in a relationship.

Witchinaditch · 05/11/2019 10:10

It’s ridiculous it’s like saying you can’t be happy single! I think it’s more empowering to just say I’m single and what’s it to you? Being single can be a choice for lots of very happy strong women! It’s not something that needs to be reworded or covered up!

RhinoskinhaveI · 05/11/2019 10:14

I like it because it implies that you can be your own best friend, be an advocate for yourself, look out for your own best interests, have your own back etc
