To worry about gastro flu in toddler DS

Handhold/advice/sanity check please as to how to deal with what seems to be gastro flu in my 25 month old toddler.
I’m not sure it’s getting better.

He vomited last Thursday night in bed....the following day (Friday) I gave him water and juice and he barely touched the dry toast I offered him.
On Saturday, he had water/juice, ate some shreddies and dry toast but vomited again that night in bed. He also had a runny tummy.
Yesterday (Sunday), he ate dry toast and shreddies again and drank more water. No vomiting last night which was encouraging, though tummy still slightly loose.

I thought we had turned a corner this morning as he seemed brighter in himself and asked for some milk - and didn’t vomit - and then asked for a fish finger for lunch at midday. No vomiting after that either.

However; this evening, we sat down post bath for a bedtime story and I gave him some warm milk, as I usually do. A couple of minutes later he vomited all over himself and our bed.

On reflection, I’m thinking it was probably not a good idea to reintroduce milk this evening - but I’m at my wit’s end as he is barely eating and more worryingly not wanting to drink much water or juice.

This is our first experience with d&v. I’m just concerned it’s not getting markedly better.
What to do? This started Thursday night and it’s now Monday night.

I have a barely six week old baby too, an ill husband and am just exhausted trying to bfeed the baby, clear up vomit and diarrhoea, dettol everything.
I have no family support or anyone to help.
Not complaining about that, am just trying to keep head down and muddle through, but I am worried that it’s not getting better.

Even if it comes back up, keep giving fluids.

Do you have Diralyte (sp). If not get some tomorrow and give this.

Some bugs take a while to shift. It took best part of 3 weeks for my 21 month old to fully shake the bug she caught from my 4yo (it also took the 4yo quite a while yo shift it actually!!)

Dairy feeds the bug so I'd avoid for a week. Rehydration powder is good as are ice lollies. As long as they're having wet nappies then I wouldn't worry too much.

Please try and give sugary drinks 2 weeks ago my 26 month old daughter was taken into hospital after d&v after i realised she wasnt getting better, her blood sugar was 2.4, it was so scary i had been keeping her hydrated but it was water and sugar free squash i hadnt even thought about sugar etc, although your son is eating a little which is good. I dont want to scare you just a bit of advice as it was so scary at the time! Hope he feels better soon xx

2yo DD has had the tummy bug. Advice from GP was to give her food and drink as and when she wanted it including milk on the grounds that if she is going to vomit she will vomit regardless of what she's having. He also said if she wasn't eating to give her full sugar Ribena and if she was vomiting it up then I should give her 10mls every ten minutes using a medicine syringe. If she was vomiting that up then it was hospital time.

You could look at the "oral fluid challenge for children"

It's how they assess in A&E

Usually its giving x amount of fluid every 5 or 10 mins and seeing if it stays down.

  • fluid is rehydration sachets

You definitely need to use rehydration sachets.
Make up a sachet, give 5ml every 5mins and then repeat at regular intervals until the vomiting stops. Feed dry crackers, toast, rich tea biscuits etc for a couple of days
