I’m being ridiculed at work for not doing this for dd. Apparently I’m ‘ruining the magic of christmas’
It’s ridiculous though! Who has the time and energy to think up bonkers things to do with an elf for 25 frigging days?! Surely the magic of presents and Santa is enough ffs. Also it’s just playing into commercialism blah blah rant rant rant.

I fucking hate elf on the shelf, refused to engage until DD2 blight herself one with her own money and then cried because hers wasn’t moving. That’s what I get for letting her watch you tube. Now I’m stuck with it FML

Hate it .. every year I get the guilt from dd about her friends and their “elves” .
I’m not giving in though , it’s creepy and I don’t like it at all .

You're hardly ruining the magic of Christmas
But kids do seem to enjoy it. I can't say we did anything elaborate with it, stuff like silly messages with the fridge magnets and setting the elf up for a teddy bears picnic in the bedroom. It's quite daft really but does it matter if children are enjoying it and parents are happy to do it? I don't see why people get so annoyed by it fgs. It's like how some seem outraged by Christmas Eve boxes. We don't bother but the usual stuff in them still makes an appearance that day. Hot chocolate, pj's etc. People love getting outraged over the way others do Christmas. Have the 'have I spent too much/not enough on presents' threads started yet

We sell those elves at work and they creep me out. Luckily my two eldest missed this (I don't know when or why it became a thing) but now we have a baby.
Don't care how much he wants an elf on the shelf when he's older. It's not happening. They look scary and the idea of a toy coming to life and moving round the house is creepy. Almost like a plot for a bloody horror movie.

I live in the Netherlands. In recent years they started trying to make it a thing here. Except the Dutch version of elves is ahem "different" (think scary racist clowns) so no way in hell am I participating and I really really hope it doesnt catch on.
fekinekkerslike · 15/10/2020 13:28
I don't do it, No way am I doing that last thing at night or getting up early. I certainly didn't need a creepy elf to bring the Christmas magic!! little git should isolate for 2 weeks anyway
PumpkinetChocolat · 15/10/2020 13:30
My kids enjoy it, it has 0 effect on them if others do it or not, who cares.
It really doesn't matter, but it's ridiculous to pretend it's hard work
It takes 5 minutes to find ideas for the entire month on Pinterest or other sites, that's the beauty of internet.
Of course it's unnecessary, but so is MN..You are still on it!
