DH & I have decided to have a weekend break away in London in December, shortly before Christmas. The plan is that we will be spending out on this experience as an alternative to spending a lot of money on Christmas gifts for one another as we usually do.

We plan to spend one night in a hotel, watch a west end show, look around at the festive things, followed by drinks and fine dining in the evening. I should point out that DH & I have no DC and have a very good combined income. Despite this, we have always stayed in cheaper hotels when on holidays and short trips away (think Premier Inn) and have always ended up walking past the lovely fancy hotels and feeling a bit jealous!

I told DH as it’s a special Christmas treat, I’d like to book somewhere luxurious and high end this time. Having spent the weekend traveling through trip advisor, I’ve found some lovely luxury hotels around the £450-£700 per night mark, all of which look fantastic and are very highly reviewed. DH initially agreed but has since started looking at all of the cheaper hotels available and says it seems silly spending out on a place to rest our heads when we could put the money towards actually doing nice things in London instead. He doesn’t seem to get the fact that staying in a nice hotel is all part of the experience.

AIBU in wanting to spend out on some luxury for once and thinking it is worth it and will really make our trip special? It’s really not as if we can’t afford it. DH thinks I’m being ridiculous. Confused

I've stayed at The Ritz several times on my own but husband hadn't ever been there. We were down in January for 1 night to see a play and I booked it. He was aghast at the price but absolutely loved the experience when we were there.

A cheaper option might be The Red Carnation hotels- Rubens at the Palace is nice and will be in the £300 or so range. The Crown Plaza/ Radisson Blu hotels are all ok and depending on location will be between £200- £350 per night.

notangelinajolie · 04/11/2019 11:36

I agree you should stay in a swanky hotel but I'm pretty convinced you don't need to pay anywhere near that kind of money.

Check out the last minute booking sites.

Comefromaway · 04/11/2019 11:37

I'd class the Strand Palace as fairly budget. I've known it be used for a school trip.

I can recommend The Gore (near the Royal Albert Hall) dh and I recently spent our 20th wedding anniversary there.

A few years ago when my parents were paying we stayed at a fabulous hotel near Buckingham Palace but I can't remember the name.

I once splashed out on a hotel in London (and by "splashed out" I mean holiday inn rather than rat infested pit we usually stay in). It was nice and everything but so much money for us that I wish we hadn't bothered as we were literally only there to sleep.

MissBarbary · 04/11/2019 11:42

Like the Plaza Waterloo

The Plaza Victoria is handier and is perfectly fine although a bit bland. It'll be around £230- £250 depending on whether paid in advance. The Waterloo Plaza will be cheaper but staying south of the river seems a bit of a faff.

I stayed at The Dorchester for my 30th. It was lovely - but we got a fabulous deal. I stay at Premier Inns most the time now (3 dc etc) - can't beat a premier inn breakfast for value for money!! LOL.

If you want a nice break away look at something like Danesfield House Hotel and Spa in Marlow - fabulous grounds, greaat food etc etc and you can relax and enjoy the facilities.

lalafafa · 04/11/2019 11:45

If you’re willing to wait the morning if travel here have some good deals

Probaby The Rubens at The Palace on Buckingham Palace Road or The Goring.

HavelockVetinari · 04/11/2019 11:52

Ooh, I'm torn - it's a huge amount of money, but I've been to Claridges and it is AMAZING, I would live there if I could!

Comefromaway · 04/11/2019 11:52

It wasn't The Goring. It did have a fancy revolving door and liveried porter but it also wasn't extortionate (except the breakfast)

MissBarbary · 04/11/2019 11:55

It was The Rubens at the Palace then. It's very nice. It used to be astonishingly cheap for the quality and they do single rooms which are lovely.

cheesenpickles · 04/11/2019 11:55

Haven't rtft but my gut is any city break where you'll be out and about, save on hotel and spend on food and doing things. If you were going to the countryside I would spend more on a hotel.

LEELULUMPKIN · 04/11/2019 12:00

Two tips.

1.Look on Secret Escapes. We have had some amazing deals on there.

We are off to Boston in Dec for 3 nights and got a 5* gold suite with brekkie and access to the gold lounge for just under £700.

They do similar deals in London.

  1. How fortunate that it is a special anniversay whilst you are away! If you happen to mention this in an email prior to your stay there is a very good chance you will get an upgrade!

Happy hunting.

LEELULUMPKIN · 04/11/2019 12:02

Oh! I also forgot tip 3!

  1. Join a cash back site for free and most of the hotel groups, booking.com, secret escapes etc have some great offers. You will save even more. I use topcashback.
LEELULUMPKIN · 04/11/2019 12:05

Just had a quick look on SE for you and there is an offer on the 5* Flemings of Mayfair. Average £275 a night with continental breakfast and that is a deluxe room. You can do it cheaper in a classic.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/11/2019 12:08

I suggest looking at The Beaufort-lovely

www.thebeaufort.co.uk

katewhinesalot · 04/11/2019 12:08

I'd rather stay for two nights in a cheaper mid price hotel.

KarmaStar · 04/11/2019 12:09

Go down the middle £200 will get you a lovely room, over £400 imo seems too self indulgent.
your money your choice.But yabu.

adaline · 04/11/2019 12:11

What's the point in spending that kind of money when by your own admission you'll be out all the time anyway?

If I was going to be out in London all day until late I would just go for a premier inn (clean, comfortable and affordable) and save the luxury accommodation for a spa weekend or similar.

How about this?

GoodGriefSunshine · 04/11/2019 12:29

There is a big difference between £450 and £700. Go to the £450 one and you will get what you want but at the lower end of your shortlist of hotels.

Cosmos45 · 04/11/2019 12:32

I've stayed in many many hotels over the years and to be honest there is little difference between a £200 a night hotel versus a £700 a night hotel in London and imho a total waste of money. Unless they are offering something totally unique that you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else then it is just money down the drain. As long as it is clean, convenient and comfortable that would be my criteria. You won't be spending much time in there and most of that will be sleeping anyhow. I would spend more money on a good show or a nice meal out than a place to lay my head to be honest.

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 04/11/2019 12:35

I'm all for fancy hotels but it's one night and you won't be there a lot anyway cos you'll be out. I'd put the money towards a taster menu with a wine pairing. Much more enjoyable!

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 04/11/2019 12:37

I stayed in a really nice place and it cost around £150. I'm sure it was in St. Paul's and it had a spa/ swimming pool, luxury rooms. It was on last minute.com and was for a Saturday!

0hT00dles · 04/11/2019 12:38

If you are planning on staying in the room and enjoying it, I'd pay the money. But as you say you'll be out and about and it's literally to sleep in, I think it's a waste.

I've stayed in hotels/castles where the rooms are crazy money, but that was for the enjoyment of the property and the experience and never leaving the grounds.

In London, you won't be in the room that much. And you can get decent rooms for under £300 a night. Suites included. A room is a room.
