to think that in fact the Lib Dems are not going to

join forces with the Tories after the election???

I think it is very clear that they want to form a majority government of their own, and this is in part why they have distanced themselves from Labour.

I would agree that they are somewhat deluded, but the stuff that I hear in particular staunch Labour supporters say about them is so depressing. You would think they were satanists, and I have in fact seen their leader referred to as Jezebel Hmm.

A very close relative of mine also holds these types of views, and cannot wait for Swinson to possibly lose her seat.

Just now someone on Facebook that I knew well years ago has posted a photo of the bus, this time it has a slogan about the NHS being sold off, with pictures of Boris and Swinson on it.

Swinson voted the way she did while part of the coalition government, but she has since talked about learning from her mistakes.

For many, the Lib Dems now represent a centre ground which is really lacking IMO. My close relative believes that increasing polarisation is good if it means that the left of the Labour Party get into power. She is glad that more centrist Labour MPs are apparently leaving. We cannot have a conversation about this as she is right, end of.

I really don’t believe that the left of the Labour Party are the only people who care about the welfare state, but I am really interested in hearing others’ opinions and learning from them.

FWIW I will be voting Lib Dem - partly due to the Brexit issue - to increase their vote share. I live in a safe Labour seat so can afford to do that. If it was a Labour / Tory marginal, I would vote Labour.

But what happens when they obviously don't win a majority? They will never be in government without joining a coalition and when it comes down to it I simply cannot trust them. Easy to say you've learned from your mistakes when it's election season isn't it.

They happily propped up horrendous far
reaching austerity policies & have blood on their hands as far as I am concerned.

They will never win a majority. They have already been in a coalition with the Tories after stating they would never go into a coalition with the Tories. Their manifesto a few years ago was against student fees and they promptly voted in favour of student fees. The most untrustworthy party in the UK.
At least the tories are honest that they don't give a fuck about anyone. The Lib Dems are liars and will say anything to get the slightest notion of power.
Jo Swinson is the worst of them all. She lives in England and pretends to represent her constituents in Scotland.

The Torries and Lib Dems are diametrically opposed on what has become almost the single issue if UK politics.

I think a second referedum is the price they'd ask for a coalition, and don't think they'd get that.

I don't see any prospect of a coalition.

ferrier · 04/11/2019 04:54

But the LibDems in coalition did what any minority party in coalition would do. They accepted that they would vote with the government on certain policies in order to get some of their own policies on the agenda. At the time their biggest issue was proportional representation. They got a referendum on that but at the cost of bargaining rights on other issues.

Grapefruity · 04/11/2019 05:20

Yes @ferrier, exactly. They're sellouts. I would trust them less than I'd trust a Tory and that's saying a lot.

Grapefruity · 04/11/2019 05:23

They weren't forced into a coalition. Against the good of the country (imo) they entered into a pact with the devil. I hope they fade into obscurity where they belong
