To consider a perm?

WIBU to get a perm?

I have really long fine straight ish hair in really good condition. I love my hair after it's been in plaits or a bun and has some body. I am absolutely useless with hair, i can straighten, do a bun, plaits or a pony tail and thats it, I'm not even very good at blow drying it properly. I can't curl hair myself and no hairdressers has ever managed to get curls to stay in for longer than a few hours.

I've been considering a perm on and off for ages because I've always wanted curly hair and I feel like my hair is so boring! Does anyone have one? Can anyone include a pic of their perm or give any advice in what to ask for? I don't want to end up looking like a poodle!

Yes I think I am happy Grin, noone has actually seen it yet other than my husband and DCs. I feel a bit self conscious about going to work tonight! It's a big change and it will take a while for me to get used to it but I'm pleased that I don't look like Annie or an 80s pop star!

That looks awesome! What did you ask for?!

Myotherusernameisbetter1 · 08/11/2019 19:57

It's a spiral perm. I think because my hair was in really good condition and quite fine it didn't go massive and over the top.

It looks lush!

Just use your straightener to wave your hair. I know it seems impossible at first but stick with it, watch vids and keep practicing. It took me a couple on months but I can now wave my hair in five mins and it looks good (I think). Much better than perm because you'd never be able to have it straight.

Sorry just seen update. Looks beautiful!

Looks great op. I got a perm when I was 17 for similar reasons, but it was more on old school perm. Lasted 2 months before I went and bought ghds, did give my hair plenty volume though Grin

Looks like my natural curls Grin it'll take a bit of practice to get used to. I find the easiest way to do it is a high knot (pony tail, folded in half), loosely secured with hairband. That keeps the curl right to the roots. Let out of a morning and separate with fingers and it should be good to go. Try to limit brushing as it will be fluffy / fizzy. I use curl definer, leave in moisturiser and oil.

OP your hair looks like mine now (on a good day!). Check out the curly girl method, although I'm not sure if it works the same for permed hair. It's really improved the condition and looks of my curls

EntropyRising · 09/11/2019 08:27

It looks amazing, OP! Swoon!

Just wondering how awkward the growing-out phase is? Do you get your roots permed, like you would with colour?

Myotherusernameisbetter1 · 10/11/2019 20:04

Thanks everyone Grin. I'll have a look into the curly girls method when I get a chance, thanks for the tips. I'm not really sure what i will do about growing it out. I'll see how it looks, apparently you can get it redone after 6-9 months but I will just wait and see.

I've been following all the advice - only brush it when wet, scrunch it with your hands with mousse, bit of serum etc and so far its been pretty easy I'd definitely recommend getting a perm for anyone tempted, I'm really glad I went for it. I washed it for the first time today and dried with a diffuser and it looked better than it looked when I came out of the salon. Possibly because I used a good conditioner.

I want a perm
My only worry is the condition it will leave my hair in
Did the hairdresser mention that at all?
I have very thin fine hair due to eating disorder so wouldn't want to ruin it more

Your perm looks lovely exactly what I would want

Myotherusernameisbetter1 · 11/11/2019 16:36

Sodamncaughtinthemiddle - the hair dresser checked the condition of my hair before she did it. It does feel slightly drier but its still in really good condition. She did say you can't have it done over bleached hair. Also I think (from googling), if your hair is in bad condition the curl can be more extreme.

Hi op

Like you I have dead straight hair which wont hold a curl. I had my hair permed when I was 18. My hairdresser had to use 2 perming lotions each time to make it stay in.

I loved having it curly. Would use a diffuser to dry and special curl spray to keep it smooth. I also did a hot oil treatment every few months to stop my hair drying out.

If you decide you no longer want the perm to get rid of mine my hairdresser just did the perm treatment without any rollers. My hair went dead straight again and we didn't need to do it again.

Good luck

Myotherusernameisbetter1 · 11/11/2019 20:03

Oldfail - thanks for the tips. I've never needed to do a hot oil treatment before but I'll definitely stock up. Can you recommend a brand?

I just used the vo5 one. But it was a few years ago now so there may be something better now.

Sodamncaughtinthemiddle · 13/11/2019 11:18

Thanks OP that's really helpful
I'm going to have a chat with my hairdresser
