AIBU to refuse to buy this for DD?

DD is turning 6 in couple of weeks, and it has been the plan for a while that I was going to buy her a scooter. Problem is, she wants a 3 wheel scooter. She's tried the two wheel ones, but they're 'scary' Hmm. I know in couple of months she will be fed up with the 3 wheeled, and wants a 2 wheeled scooter like her brother. AIBU to think she's too old for the 3 wheeled? And to just buy her the 'scary scooter' and let her get on with it and hopefully she will become comfortable riding it?

Halfords have lots to try! We let ds choose his own for his 5 th. He chose a 2 wheel one and can manage fine.
Show her the age appropriate signs. Ones 5+ tell her she can manage because it says so!! Ds is forever checking these on games and announcing he is allowed /can manage!

Scootersarethedevil · 03/11/2019 13:27

@Winterdaysarehere didn't even think of showing the age appropriate sign, thanks! Smile I'm sure she'd rather have a scooter that says 5+ than 3+. Or I hope! We'll see

Aren’t there some that convert from 4 to 3 to 2 wheels?

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 03/11/2019 13:43

My 8yo still rides her 3 wheel maxi micro scooter. It's a good scooter and should last her a few years yet. My 10yo has a 2 wheeler but actually prefers her bike anyway.

NannyR · 03/11/2019 13:46

I've known children up to ten who use three wheeler scooters (I think the brand was iScoot), you can buy three wheelers that are designed for older children, micro scooters do them as well.

GameSetMatch · 03/11/2019 14:15

You can get a three wheel scooter for 5+ I think they are on offer at Smyths atm too, it’s better to get her a three wheel scooter she wants and will use rather than a two wheeler that she doesn’t? My 5 year old wants and it going to get a three wheeler for Christmas, it’s not too old.

www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/outdoor/scooters/i-sporter/isporter-xl-led-black-scooter/p/165989 YES, here’s a 5+ three wheel scooter

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 03/11/2019 14:21

How about a three wheel that can later convert to two?!

My DD couldn’t cope with a 2 wheel scooter until this summer (shes 10 next month). It was mainly a confidence thing and she was happy with her 3 wheel maxi micro scooter. This summer she finally gained her confidence to not only go a two wheel but also a bike, she’s had the ability to go both for a while but was always too scared and would jump off.

We all know our own children better than anyone else. If you are sure she will be desperate for a 2 wheel in a couple of months then get her one, if you think it will put her off and she will continue to ask for a 3wheel then go for one of them.

littlebillie · 03/11/2019 15:05

Why not try Decathlon they can try out scooters there and the accessories are great

WelshMammaofaSlovak · 03/11/2019 15:08

What about getting a cheaper second hand three wheeler for the short term and then replacing it with a second hand 2 wheeler when she's ready??? You could still pay a bit more to get a good one but it may just feel less wasteful?

myself2020 · 03/11/2019 15:12

My oldest generally uses a 3 wheeler, but is also fine on my 2 wheeler. its easier to go slow on s 3 wheeler, so he uses that for going into town, shopping, along busy roads. he uses my 2 wheeler in the skate park etc. he’s almost 7

MidnightMystery · 03/11/2019 15:22

The three wheeler scooters are the new in thing these days.

Honeybee85 · 03/11/2019 15:25

Isn’t it possible to lease or rent one, for lets say a month or 2? Then she can make a much more informed decision.

Frenchw1fe · 03/11/2019 15:30

When my 7 year old grandson came to visit for summer we bought him a scooter to have at our house, got the age appropriate one.
On arrival he complained that it only had 2 wheels as his home one has 3, we hadn’t known his other was 3 wheeled.
We encouraged him to try it a bit each day and after a week he was fine.
As pp says let’s her see age appropriate and she’ll probably want 2 wheeled.

Justalittlebitfurther · 03/11/2019 15:34

My 10 year old still uses her micro scooter with three wheels and so do all of her friends. Get her the one she wants, not one she won’t use.

Sammy867 · 03/11/2019 15:38

My dd is 5 and uses the micro scooter cruiser- it has handle bars like a chopper and extra large wheels so good for tracks - it seems more stable than other two wheel scooters

clareykb · 03/11/2019 15:55

I'm having the same quandary as my 6 year old has outgrown her old one and wants a bigger one for Xmas..but still 3 wheels. She was a premmie and has some issues with hyper mobility so I think am going to er on the side of caution and get her one of the bigger 3 wheelers mentioned here.

IdiotInDisguise · 03/11/2019 15:58

Get her what she wants. It is not as if she is going to be using it as a form of transport being 6.

IMO 3 wheeler ones are a bit babyish but so are those huge bows girls are using on their heads and they love them. I get it is all about fitting in in their friend group.

Witchend · 03/11/2019 17:14

What about a razor one?
Ds loves his. It sparks when you brakes and has 3 wheels. He's 12yo.

Thesearmsofmine · 03/11/2019 17:21

My ds2 has just turned 7 and will be getting a 3 wheeler for Christmas as he doesn’t like the 2 wheeled ones. My older ds has had a 2 wheeler for a few years and it hasn’t made ds2 want a 2 wheeler at all!

billandbenflowerpotmen1 · 03/11/2019 17:27

I've just bought my 6 year old GS a two wheeled 'big boy' scooter at his request. He's not exactly a brave soul and, after a slight tumble, announced he hated it and wants his little boy three wheeled one back ( I've sold it!)
So I'm not sure what to advise you!

jackparlabane · 03/11/2019 17:51

Ds has used his maxi micro since he was 7 and is now 11, going a mile to and from school on it each day. The 2-wheelers are more about stunts than travel.

Sewbean · 03/11/2019 17:57

Buy her what she wants. Just don't get a very expensive one if you think she'll outgrow it soon. Ours are all from Decathlon and have been good. You'll have a birthday/Christmas gift lined up for next time.

LemonPrism · 03/11/2019 19:48

I was bought roller skates at that age instead of skates because I found them scary... never graduated to blades
