To think this is ridiculous

I went into a store yesterday to purchase glasses for my son. I asked where the frames for males were and the assistant said that were not allowed to say that anymore and that she could point me in the direction of mixed frames. I absolutely thought how ridiculous. My son is a boy therefore I wanted a masculine frame.
I’ve woken up this morning to read an article about transgender people complained about the Venus sign on sanitary products.
Another article about a birth coach who was ostracised by her employer because she said only women can have babies (give birth).
I can’t help think that all this is very silly. In my world you are either a male or female however I get that there are some undefined or gender confused people. Am I being unreasonable

Surely transgender male to female have no need of sanitary products?! World’s gone mad.

codenameduchess · 03/11/2019 16:00

@Cherrysoup correct, someone who is FTM trans would have need of them, they do not identify with the female symbol.

I'm not saying I agree with it but there are 2 sides, not everything is about MTF.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/11/2019 16:07

The female symbol does not need to be on san pro. What about incontinence pads? Location of thickest padding depends on position of outlet - it's useful to be able to see which is which on the packaging.

Vulpine · 03/11/2019 16:41

My dd chose pink frames with little hearts on Shock

Gingaaarghpussy · 03/11/2019 16:50

I went into my local specsavers yesterday. The frames they have for kids is awesome. Why cant I have iron man, starwars, batman or superman plastered all over my glasses? I don't particularly like the versions geared towards females.
I want to be a child! Grin

Have you considered identifying as a child and calling the specsavers staff bigots if they don't have iron man glasses in your size? It's very fashionable at the moment.

lljkk · 03/11/2019 20:17

I've been wearing spectacles for 7 yrs & never knew until that there were male & female sorts. Confused

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/11/2019 20:20

Glasses of any kind can be worn by either sex. There is no such thing as a pair of 'boys glasses'.

Sanitary towels are only used by one sex. All sanitary protection is for women.

They aren't the same thing at all.

MorganKitten · 03/11/2019 20:56

Did you notice they had female symbols on before they were taken off? Most people didn’t....
And it wasn’t a complaint, someone tweeted a question at always so they changed it.

Ooh! I never knew that, maybe I will ask. Grin

KatharinaRosalie · 03/11/2019 21:03

YABU re frames, YANBU for the rest. Totally different issues - no need to gender children's glasses. I was buying some slime yesterday and was asked if it's for boy or girl - I said the plan is that they use their hands to play with it in any case..
But the doula story is ridiculous. She didn't say anything phobic at least based on what has been reported in media.

StreetwiseHercules · 03/11/2019 21:05

“ They’re taking the sex/gender thing too far for a minority of people with mental health problems.”

I agree, and in doing so making them problems worse.

Cherrysoup · 03/11/2019 21:26

@codenameduchess

Oops, bloody good point, my bad!

donquixotedelamancha · 03/11/2019 21:29

I read the letter, it was clearly a complaint. I can see that slight changes to packaging seems like a petty thing to get exercised over, however I think the reason it has caused such frustration is twofold:

  1. There seems to be a constant drip, drip of areas of public life where 'woman' is being removed, just as it felt like progress on the visibility of women was being made.
  1. Nothing epitomises the biological basis of the challenges faced by women more than having the period. If we can't even discuss this as a feature of womanhood, what does being a woman mean?
itsgettingweird · 03/11/2019 21:43

I was in spec savers Monday.

They had

Kids
Teens
Woman
Men

Sections of glasses.

My ds is a teen and I asked where men's were because he's grown now (15yo) and they said yes - he would need to go into adults.

Due to basic biology there is a difference between the fames. Width and arm length generally.
