In being a bit uncertain about ds's gender neutral toilets?

I've just noticed that our school voted to make the toilets gender neutral. It's a school that has ages 5-18 and no designated toilets for age groups.

I'm not at all anti trans. A good friend is trans. I have reservations about this though.

We are in a position to challenge this decision as DH is a school board member (like a governor but with lots more power) and was absent for the vote.

But any gentle comments I've made here regarding the erosion of women's rights have been met with universal anger and people thinking I'm very anti trans. (I'm in the States.) Thinking here around the issue seems to be a lot more black and white.

I need some calm and balanced language that dh and I can take to the school without looking like we're trans hating bigots.

We had unisex toilets for about half a year when I was at school due to remodelling being done of the boys toilets. It was horrible. Trying to change pads when you're on your period and boys actually trying to look over/under stalls at you when they hear the rip, then going out braying with laughter gleefully shouting "Susie X is on the blob!!!!". One boy even got his brother to get him some kind of "skeleton key" and they would joyfully unlock the doors when the girls where in there. Piss everywhere. No privacy. It ended up that the entire male half of the school had to attend an assembly, and letters where sent home to all male student parents about "expected behaviour". One story, obviously, but that's what happens. Young girls need privacy to change sanitary items. Or just privacy in general. Older girls may be ok with handling it, but it's the younger ones I would worry about, based purely on my own memories of what the little shits were like to us girls.

No sorry! It would be really nice if the pupils could get a say in their own toilets wouldn't it?!

@raisinseverywhere

I'm not sure. Hence not wading in yet.

There's 90ish kids in the school.

DH is encouraged to spend lots of time in the school so he can go take a look at the boys loos.

So dh spoke to another school board member and it turns out the way it was written was wrong. Hmm

Most of the toilets are single toilets (that were en suite bathrooms to bedrooms) and the only toilets with multiple stalls are in the gym and that will NOT be gender neutral. They really need to work on their wording!
