To think the general election will be just as divisive as a 2nd ref would have been

If not worse! So all the nonsense about not wanting to divide the country by having a second ref doesn't ring true for me. Already feelings seem to be running quite high about the GE and we've got 6 wks of this to go

The whole thing is a pointless waste of time. It's a stealth referendum as it will only be on one issue. Why not call a spade a bloody spade.

It's really about time the government held up their hands and said "right lads, we've had 3 years and clearly this isnt working. Let's chalk this up to experience and shelve Brexit. We gave it a good go but its too expensive and everyone will be worse off".

This actually happened in my dream Brexit fantasy. Which was also filled with unicorns, fairies and mystical dragons.

A second referendum would take at least 6 months and would still have left a deadlock in Parliament. This is the best way to actually get things done after 3 years of indecision!

CactusAndCacti · 31/10/2019 22:05

YANBU - I fully agree with you, it is likely to be a disaster and not actually resolve the issue of NOC.

I have been following the polls, Tories are in front but I have no idea how this then translates into seats, but even more surprising is the drop from Labour, with the current comedy act going on in parliament a worthy opponent would be increasing their % not dropping. So if the Conservatives win, there is still a ridiculous party in opposition.

We're kind of screwed either way.

Cinammoncake · 31/10/2019 22:06

I disagree that it would've left a deadlock cendrillon because most remainers I have spoken to think that if, knowing what we know now, and an honest campaign run not like last time, leave still won, it would be a lot easier to accept than the current situation. If remain won, no deadlock, just shelve it.

I think the election might bring a hung parliament so more deadlock

littleandoften I agree but also it's worse than a stealth referendum because if the Tories win, they won't now need to get 52% of votes to claim will of the people etc, it will be on far less votes than before even

It's a stealth referendum as it will only be on one issue. The results will be impossible to understand. There'll be Brexiteers voting Tory, remainers voting Tory "to avoid a Marxist government", brexiteers voting Labour because they can't stand a Tory gvt (OK, probably not many of those), remainers voting Labour, remainers voting Lib dem, and so on. Is that what you meant by "stealth" - everyone will vote on Brexit, but in such a way that no-one will know how many voted each way? Grin

LittleAndOften · 31/10/2019 22:16

@MereDintofPandiculation you could also just call it "utter confusion" Grin

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/10/2019 22:16

This is the best way to actually get things done after 3 years of indecision! This is the best way to get Brexit done, but we have no idea whether the country still wants Brexit done, given that the voters who have left the electore since 2016 are of a demographic more likely to vote Leave and the voters who have joined the electorate are of a demographic more likely to vote Remain.

I'll just drop these here. Please note the dates T-May blew down from 45%. BJ is only on 40% at same point in current GE cycle.
