. . . to think microchipping is an absolute rip-off?!

We recently moved house, and I previously changed my surname due to marriage in the last couple of years. Today I (finally) got around to looking at updating the microchip info for our two house cats.

One microchip database owner wants £10 to change my address, and another £10 to change my name, and the other wants £25 for a change of details!

AIBU to think this is a bit much?!

Or am I naive for being so surprised?

It seems like a rip off. They do have to make money somehow! I think an overall change fee of £10 would be more reasonable at least. Free even better!!!

Toddlerteaplease · 31/10/2019 18:19

I'd gladly pay it to make sure my beloved cats had a chance of being reunited with me if they went missing!

redchocolatebutton · 31/10/2019 18:20

yabu
it's just one of the costs of keeping pets.

Wizzbangpop · 31/10/2019 18:22

The bit that's a rip off is that the chip has to be named in the puppy's breeders name at 6 weeks old. Then the new owner has to pay £20 or something to change all of the details when they bring the puppy home at 8 weeks.

We were very close to the breeder so was like can we have our details on The chip from the off. And that wasn't allowed. W

YANBU a £10 admin fee is more than enough. Greedy bastards everywhere these days.

Chocolatelover45 · 31/10/2019 18:24

You pay an admin fee to change your details with your car insurer - this is similar. The amazing thing is that it's so cheap to get the chip in the first place

Pinkblueberry · 31/10/2019 18:25

I wouldn’t bother with the name change and just change the address details. In the event you really need to prove you’re the cat owner just bring your marriage certificate along.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 31/10/2019 18:25

In fact the more I think about it, the more annoyed I am. £45 !!! That would feed a family of four for a week, and they want to take that off you to put a few details in a data base.

Ginfordinner · 31/10/2019 18:26

YABU. One of my friends was reunited with her cat because he was microchipped.

Jimdandy · 31/10/2019 18:28

I think a £10 overall charge to change your details is fair.

I used to manage a team at the council that was responsible for the collection of stray dogs. The amount of times we rang the phone number for it to be either cut off or constantly go straight to answerphone was unbelievable. In fact, I don’t remember ever actually reaching an owner.

Then when they rang up creating at being charged and we said we called your number it it’s cut off or goes straight to answerphone and they’d say “I haven’t had that number for years” sorry our Chrystal ball is broken haha

DontCallMeShitley · 31/10/2019 18:31

PetLog, I recently had to deal with them but just to change ownership and about £6.00. No charge to report deceased.

However, we have had to pay £25 each time to change address.

Maybe look at the change ownership section and see if it cheaper to do that as it also includes an address change.

PinkpompomDaisy · 31/10/2019 18:44

It’s a ridiculous amount I agreed, a £10 admin fee would suffice

PinkpompomDaisy · 31/10/2019 18:45

Agree*

fairydustandpixies · 31/10/2019 18:49

I also had to pay £25 to register my new address, nothing more 🤷‍♀️

Cryalot2 · 31/10/2019 18:49

I put expenses down to having a pet. Some were more and others less
To me the insurance was much more than I expected.
Its a bit like the admin charge for a ticket name change.

RedPandaFluff · 31/10/2019 18:54

I reckon £10 is reasonable but anything more is disproportionate.

Lots of people move house more frequently than we do; especially if they're renting. It would be frustrating to have to pay more than that every time.

YABU, one of the many costs of having pets, I just got a 16 week puppy and have to spend £20 to change his chip
