AIBU to need help with 5th birthday party?!

On AIBU for traffic, sorry! Having a bit of a panic.
Eldest dc is turning 5 soon. I booked the village hall several weeks ago when he'd not long started school. I decided not to do a whole-class party as I thought he'd be a bit overwhelmed and enjoys playing with his friends he's known for ages. Plus I thought it'd be too much for me to organise 30 kids.

It's his first 'proper' party and he's been to loads of village hall type parties over the past couple of years so I thought I'd just do what they all did when turning 3 or 4 but now I'm wondering if it's a faux pas not to invite whole class? He's already going to two whole-class ones that have party entertainers, which now seem a really good idea esp the ones that basically 'run' the party.

So we've invited 17 (less than half of his class plus a handful from the other reception class - he basically gave me a list of who he plays with and they're mostly kids I already know well (and their mums)). About half of those will have toddler siblings which I've invited as we have a toddler too and this is what others have done previously. Again now I'm not too sure if it's different for 5yos rather than 4! Expecting parents to stay.

Also I thought a bouncy castle and a few toys/colouring corner plus dancing/balloons/pass the parcel would be fine in terms of entertainment (they seem to love just running round the hall) plus some ride-ons and small soft play bits etc for the little ones. Should I have something more structured? Obviously there'll be party lunch too.

Another question about the cake. There'll be quite a lot of family coming too so the cake should feed all the kids plus family, although I guess I could do a separate cake for family! How do you make your own big cake? Are there massive cake tins like roasting tins that you can bake in and then decorate? Last year we got an M&S one that fed about 25 but that won't be big enough.

Thanks for any tips!

(I'm not going to cancel the bouncy castle and have an entertainer instead though as he's really looking forward to the bouncy castle!)

Thanks! That thread is really helpful. Since going to a whole-class party I started to wonder if it was "supposed" to be different for 5 year old school kids rather than 4yos!

The temp tattoo idea is good. Not sure I'll have too many family that will be 'helpful' though Grin
