To ask you what ginger tea I can drink?

SheBloodyNameChangedAgain · 30/10/2019 20:54

I'm pregnant and experiencing awful morning sickness. Every ginger tea I picked up today had ingredients that are apparently dangerous in pregnancy (hibiscus, liquorice root). Does anyone have any recommendations? I made my own tonight but it was very burny and too much effort in the mornings and in work.

Thanks in advance

P.s if anyone has any other tips for all day morning sickness, that would be great

You might be better off asking in the pregnancy forums OP! They'll have lots of advice.

PastTheGin · 30/10/2019 21:06

You can just cut up some fresh ginger and pour boiling water over it.

Thecrown3 · 30/10/2019 21:08

Ginger biscuits are ideal

Oct18mummy · 30/10/2019 21:09

Try Myrtle and Maude Bon bons they really helped me. I still can’t bring myself to eat/drink anything ginger after my pregnancy 🤮

goose1964 · 30/10/2019 21:09

I came on to say the same as pass, sliced fresh ginger in boiling water

LittleTopic · 30/10/2019 21:12

I drank Twinings, which apparently has licorice root in it. DD was 2 weeks late and perfectly healthy but I didn’t drink much.

Maybe ask your midwife if there’s a ‘safe’ level?

I’ve got a variety of herbals, lemon and ginger is nice, as well as ginger with other fruits. Or you can buy ginger root capsules from Holland & Barrett which I found were really helpful and you can either take them as a tablet or break them open and dilute them in hot water to drink as a tea.

Ginger biscuits don’t have enough ginger in them to be therapeutic, but if you like them try them! Sometimes something to stabilise blood sugar can help.

Nausea is awful, you have my sympathy. Plain food, sickness bands, sipping cold water and crackers in my drawer at work helped. Lasted till about 14 weeks and then has gradually eased off 👏🏻

This is the one I drink. Also found camomile tea helped, as did peppermint.

Stem ginger in syrup - chop up some bits and put the syrup in some hot water as well

Venger · 30/10/2019 21:32

You don't have to be sick all day, you can ask your GP for anti-emetics. Current clinical guidelines state that even for 'normal' pregnancy sickness (as opposed to HG) they can prescribe a short course of medication to get you through the worst of it.

Hockneypool · 30/10/2019 21:34

I agree slices of ginger in hot water.

SheBloodyNameChangedAgain · 30/10/2019 21:49

Thanks everyone. I thought the ginger slices had to be boiled for 10 mins then drink the water? I could definitely just slice some up in work.

I enjoy chamomile tea but was told that was bad in pregnancy?! Its a minefield.

All midwife advised was to stay away from raspberry leaf tea.

So sorry about your morning sickness! I have terrible nausea and drink a lot of fresh ginger tea. I grate the ginger, pour over boiling water, and then strain it into a thermos to take around with me. Sometimes I add a little bit of honey or sugar. It is really good to sip when I'm feel awful.

RadicalFern · 30/10/2019 22:06

(I used to slice the ginger but it took longer for the water to get all gingery. I also sometimes make industrial quantities and then put it in a big bottle in the fridge so I can microwave mug fulls when I need it)

Majorcollywobble · 30/10/2019 22:09

Old Jamaica ginger beer in a can contains fresh ginger and is refreshing .

Peccary · 30/10/2019 22:13

Came here to say the same as Majorcollywobble. Also the belvoir ginger cordial

RadicalFern · 30/10/2019 22:16

Yes! Ginger beer with real ginger is great! And the fizzy helps with the nausea too...

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 30/10/2019 22:39

Eat small meals and include baked potatoes. Actually, eat baked potato. Helps even with hyperemesis.

Notcontent · 30/10/2019 22:46

Please don’t drink old Jamaica ginger beer - it’s incredibly high in sugar.

I make ginger tea by shopping up ginger very finely or grating it and also adding some lemon and honey.

If OP is vomiting frequently then it's fine to include sugary foods in her diet, such as sugary drinks, to help bump up her overall calorie intake. I had HG in pregnancy and was told by the hospital to choose full fat and full sugar products over low fat or sugar free, they're not the ideal/optimum source of calories and energy but some is better than none when you're vomiting lots.

faw2009 · 30/10/2019 22:58

My mum swears by drinking ginger water every day. Not just for pregnancy but for general health, and most definitely at first symptons of a cold. Slice up a thumb size amount of ginger. Add water to nearly full in a small saucepan. Cover. Bring to boil. Simmer for an hour. (set an alarm), so that around half the water is gone. It's really intense but by heck it warms you up.

LemonPrism · 30/10/2019 23:21

Lemon and ginger from twinnings?

IWouldLikeToKnow · 31/10/2019 05:04

I drank Pukka three ginger tea. Still do, it's lovely.

rosewater20 · 31/10/2019 05:09

I am in my first trimester and have been dealing with awful morning (all day) sickness. I searched all over for plain ginger tea, and it was hard to find (can't remember where I eventually found it). I would try soaking the ginger root in a big thermos of hot water with lemon and honey. It should last all day, and it tastes delicious.

I was also told to avoid chamomile tea and so only drink straight peppermint and ginger. I did have a chai tea the other day and didn't think about if it was allowed until after I had consumed two cups of it.

SheBloodyNameChangedAgain · 31/10/2019 06:49

Thanks again. I am up early to prep some for the day as it did take the edge off last night !
