To be anxious about my heart rate (BPM)?

I’m quite unfit, slightly overweight, don’t do much exercise but I am on my feet a lot with a 1 year old and my job is very active. I’m 30 years old. Not sure what my BMI is.

Anyway my resting heart rate is 59 bpm, when I’m standing or walking it’s 88-90bpm , sometimes more.

Do I need to be concerned about it? I had a baby 12 months ago and I’m thinking my hormones might be out of whack. I’m also still breastfeeding but much less than I was, getting ready to stop.

My dad has a fib and cardiac issues like angina run in my dad’s family.

60-100 resting is normal. How are you tracking it? With a fitbit? You can investigate the data on the app, and look at your fitness levels and the different heart rate zones.

I'm in no way qualified, but I'd say you're fairly normal.

Your heart rate is normal.

I'm interested in what you believe your heart rate should be? Is it the fact your heart rate raises by 30 when you stand that's making you concerned? Do you get any other symptoms with it like dizziness etc?

I'm not medically trained or anything but if not then sounds pretty normal to me.

PenelopeFlintstone · 30/10/2019 12:20

My resting heart rate is 80, if that makes you feel any fitter.

Chupchup · 30/10/2019 12:22

Mine is this exactly. I'm a stone overweight but run 3 times a week. It's healthy, isn't it? I'd say you're anxious cos of your dad's issues maybe?

Yesterday, I was at a funeral and drinking from 12 till 7.30pm. My heart started racing at about 10pm and I got a blood pressure monitor out of the cupboard. My heart rate was 114 and then 115. Please comment if you know about this stuff. Thanks.

mrwalkensir · 31/10/2019 20:33

mine went up when (unconsciously) stressed about my Dad's funeral. It also goes up when I eat foods that I'm intolerant to.

bobstersmum · 31/10/2019 20:37

Your heartrate is really good. Why are you concerned? I have had some cardiac issues lately, my hr is usually very similar to yours, but I have had episodes out of the blue where it shoots up to 100-150 and it stays like that for anything up to hours. Ecg showed borderline possible svt but at the moment I have to just make note of it. I have beta blockers for these episodes. I don't think you have anything to worry about unless you have anything similar to what I've described.

NoCauseRebel · 31/10/2019 20:40

It’s fine. Heart rates aren’t generally considered to be a problem until they are consistently over 100 BPM, note “consistently” as there will be occasions when they spike perhaps due to stress or heavy exercise.

Put it like this, it took for my heart rate to go up to 220 BPM before I had to be defibrilated. Shock but I have serious and multiple heart issues, am also currently in cardiac rehab after an extended stay in the hospital and there are people there whose heart rates go above 100 BPM while exercising but then come back down after.

My resting heart rate is generally around 60 BPM now.

There are foods etc which can affect your heart rate such as high sugar foods etc.

bobstersmum · 31/10/2019 20:40

For info, you hr increases when you are ill or fighting something off. It also increases if you have a high temperature. When you are poorly it is normal for your hr to be 100 or more.

SpoonBlender · 31/10/2019 20:43

If you're concerned about heart rates, see your doctor. Penelope, this means you. MIL had a heart racing incident (135bpm) and is now on beta blockers to keep it sensible.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 31/10/2019 20:43

My resting heart rate is 52. When I'm asleep, its normally in low 40's, sometimes 37/38. When I walk fast it can be around 100 or so, and when I ride my horse, depending on what we are doing, it can be 150. Have seen cardiology due to palpitations during menopause, and I'm completely normal, even with a low pulse when asleep.

k1233 · 31/10/2019 22:10

If you exercise your heart rate will go up to 150-180bpm possibly even more for high intensity. But that is for a short time.

A low resting heart rate, when you aren't fit, can be due to thyroid issues. My resting heart rate is about 50bpm and my thyroid is underactive. I also have low temperature - usually low 35s that drops into 34s when I'm sick. Again, common with thyroid problems.

k1233 · 31/10/2019 22:13

I'll add 88-90bpm is barely moving. It doesn't really count as exercise. Google target heart rates to see fat burning and aerobic ranges for your age.

Elle7rose · 31/10/2019 22:30

I think that sounds like a perfect pulse? 60 at rest is healthy and slightly above that but under 100 when walking is normal too.

140-150 when walking briskly or jogging is also fine and it could up to 190 when running as fast as you can (age 30, it drops as you age).

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/11/2019 03:55

SpoonBlender - If you're concerned about heart rates, see your doctor. Penelope, this means you.
I did. I told him that it’s after alcohol and he said that it’s fine - it’s the body catching up after everything being suppressed by the alcohol.

It just feels so weird. I wake up wide awake at about 2.30 in the morning; heart racing and eyes wide.
So I thought I’d ask here too in case anyone has similar or has a different opinion.
Subsequent posts of 140-150 when brisk walking are reassuring.
