to ask if there's any shop you avoid for a particular reason?

For me, it's Tescos.

Simple reason - I was on my way home from work last winter (office job, so well dressed) and popped into local large Tesco to pick up something. Was innocently wandering around when I got a tap on the shoulder - it appeared to be a staff member (so having my headphones in) didn't hear what he said, so just replied, 'No, I'm fine thanks'. He taps again and I took headphones out and he said 'We have a NO HOODS POLICY in the store'. I took my hood down but was secretly seething - FFS, it was sub zero outside and I'd just come inside.

So I'll do everything I can to avoid Tescos.

Any others?

Really hate CO OP ! A few years back went in for a few bits ,realised I had forgotten my mushrooms, Security Guy asked me for my receipt !(luckily had it on me !) Last week went in to get some bits ,paid at self serve till ,it ate my £10 note. Manager was summoned ,could not have cared less !,rude and surly and no apology ! Use the local shop whenever I can ,or drive to SB to avoid

Greeper · 30/10/2019 11:29

Marina and Tree... but surely you get their cut price wonky box with a side order of leery sexist patronising thrown in? Agree, not convinced!

NoraThePessimist · 30/10/2019 11:31

Actually I'm surprised a lot of the shops mentioned are still in business, with the crap service, empty shops and employee/branch operations costs...

W H Smith
House of Fraser
Body Shop
Mothercare

.. honestly no idea how they make a profit, they're deserted on the rare occasion I go in.. and invariably leave empty handed because it's so expensive compared to online shops OR they don't have in stock an item I'd pay more to see in person or is urgent (e.g. clothing fit, emergency baby purchases etc).

I remember going into house of Fraser to buy pillows a couple of years ago, there was about 3 on show in the "department" and I was advised to look and buy onthe website at the till when I asked... So, I ordered from another store, obviously, because HOF were super expensive and sloooooow delivery unless I coughed up more £££.

BadSun · 30/10/2019 11:32

Any shop that sells the same things as another shop but at a higher price.

RingtheBells · 30/10/2019 11:33

House of Fraser since it turned into Sports Direct, I won't order online from there either

RingtheBells · 30/10/2019 11:35

Also Aldi, Lidl and Shoe zone

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/10/2019 11:40

Not for ethical reasons particularly, but I can’t go into Primark because it makes me feel panicky - so chaotic. I don’t have the patience for it.

I never go into places like White Stuff, Joules, Fat Face etc, because the things they sell are not to my taste. Ditto Monsoon, and Oasis.

I absolutely hate WH Smith, with their additional till items, lack of actual tills/misfunctioning self-serve tills, but sometimes needs must.

I feel I would get on well with your husband, my ASDA boycott has lasted 20 years.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe

I call those shops the snob shops, you can tell the difference between them and shops who regularly deal with people who are very rich, the latter know that threadbare jumpers and 20 year old shoes are not a sign of money.

Also they are still nice if you are not going to buy something, I've had a £20 000 watch on my wrist, I went in, said I could never afford it and could I try it on please.

I got the full, sit down, which one was it, well this has x, y z - if I win the lottery I'm going back there to buy it.

TommyShelby · 30/10/2019 11:44

H and m - their sizing blows my mind. I have to pick up 17 of the same item in different sizes and can guarantee none of them will fit

Zara - overpriced, poor quality, snobby people who work in their shops and shite customer service. The last time I went in there was a queue almost out the door and one girl serving. Other staff were just milking around and chatting. I just turned round and walked out again

DrDreReturns · 30/10/2019 11:44

WH Smith for me. Too expensive. Why anyone would buy a card from there is beyond me, I too wonder how they are still in business.
I also avoid Boots, I hate the layout and can never seem to find what I want!

Branster · 30/10/2019 11:44

WH Smith - can’t stand the place, loathe it, it is laid out like a market stall, it is overpriced and most staff are rude. I would not be in the least sorry if it goes under. As for their airport and train station locations ... Angry
Lush as well, feel nauseous just walking past.
Claire’s is utterly vile, always hot and full of crap.

Apple stores really irritate me and for the thousands of pounds I’ve spent over the years I’d expect much, much, much better from them. Always busy, you have to wait for ages to be served even if you simply want to buy 1 item and you know exactly what it is.

Wherearemyminions · 30/10/2019 11:45

My nearest Asda, it's just grim, not the store but the clientele. I'm sure people go there just to shout at their kids, and yes I've been there, supermarket shopping with kids is stressy but this is full on "Get yer arse back ere or I'll fucking smack you" stuff.

LondonJax · 30/10/2019 11:46

The only shop I won't use is Lush. I actually have to cross the road when I go past the one in a shopping centre that I use. The smell just makes me feel ill - my nose actually begins to sting. It all smells so synthetic and heady.

Other than that I have my small 'not buying from them' because of bad customer service. But I normally end up going back because I like the actual products or it's a cheaper shop to buy my favourites in unfortunately.

MontStMichel · 30/10/2019 11:46
  1. Lush - I can’t cope with the smell!
  2. Primark - I can’t cope with shops in a mess!
  3. TK Maxx - ditto. Racks of mess!
SpaceCadet4000 · 30/10/2019 11:47

In the UK: WH Smith. They just seem to make shopping there so difficult and depressing.

In the US: Hobby Lobby, for their religious liberty crap: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burwell_v._Hobby_Lobby_Stores,_Inc.

Babyroobs · 30/10/2019 11:48

I wont buy anything at Hotel Chocolat as they were so horrible to my lovely friend when she went to an interview there. she still gets upset talking about it years later. In the course of my job I here from a lot of clients about how their employers treat them when they or their partner have been diagnosed with cancer so if I here a certain retailer has treated someone badly I'm less likely to shop there for a while !

attillathenun · 30/10/2019 11:50

Lush and Hollister purely because of the eye watering, headache inducing smell
Primark and TK Maxx - the ones near me are a right mess and I just can't stand having to dig through the piles of clothes to find what I want
Homebase - literally how are they still in business?? our local shop is absolutely useless and has nothing in stock
IKEA - unless you go for when it opens or is about to close, the place is a total no go (especially at weekends_. I also can't stand being dictated to about where to walk by those arrows on the floor and the tidal waves of people walking in a line around the shop make me want to run out screaming

Babyroobs · 30/10/2019 11:50

I also hate the COOP but it is my only local supermarket. The way they put their pricing is misleading, their prices are ridiculous and when they do start reducing stuff they have one person wandering round reducing things by 3p then half an hour later by another 3p. FFS if you want to get rid of produce going out of date just sort a good reduction and it will sell !!

woodhill · 30/10/2019 11:53

Zara - like a jumble sale, weird sizing, long queues, bad quality.

Gone off Monsoon for the expensive and not great fabrics

PurpleFrames · 30/10/2019 11:56

I love lush products but dislike the harassment you get in store! I only go with a friend to act as a buffer haha.

I don't like top shop- makes me feel like a fat whale with the teeny members of staff and thumping disco music.

Also posh shops like loccitane and molton brown that make you feel like an urchin when you walk in...

@Babyroobs What happened to your friend!? :(

RossPoldarkFan · 30/10/2019 11:56

I am surprised that so many people find the smell of Lush does not agree with them. I'm allergic to lots of things and can't go near Body Shop but like Lush.
I agree on TKMaxx, it's always full of overpriced badly sized clothes with "designer" labels that no-one has ever heard of.
Shops I avoid (or wear sunglasses in) due to glary lights causing migraine - Primark, New Look, Card Factory, Uniglo.

Fluffy40 · 30/10/2019 11:57

Yes to Ikea, always go in a good mood and end up stressed, esp since removal of proper check outs.

Drogosnextwife · 30/10/2019 11:57

New look when they stopped me because their stupid beeper went off as I went through the door. The woman insisted on taking each individual bag through seperalty, then me, then ds in his pram. Funnily it didn't go off at all with the individual items going through. She really was treating me like I had robbed half the shop.
IKEA after I accidentally scanned a tupperware box with the lid on but they were supposed to be done seperalty. It had been the only one on the shelf and it was put together when I put it in my trolly. Scanned it and the woman on the tills didn't even come over to let me know, she waited until I was leaving and got the security guard to come and go through my bags and check my receipt. I was Mortified! I had spend £130 but yeah, I was stealing a tupperware box for £1 Hmm. I sat on the phone, in the car park, for 15 minutes to their customer services desk to complain. The woman on the phone was lovely and its the only reason I go back. The woman on the self service tills could have just come up and told me, I would have been embarrassed enough by my mistake.

The boyd shop and lush. They just hound you from the moment you walk into the shop.
Oh also schuh. I don't need 3 staff members to say hello to me on the way in the door, I just want to look around.

AliceLittle · 30/10/2019 11:57

Matalan for always trying to force a bloody card on you for every sale.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 30/10/2019 11:59
