To ask if baths are hygienic?!

imundecided · 29/10/2019 21:58

I very much enjoy a nice bath in the evenings. Some days I'll shower, some days I'll have a bath depending on my mood.

I just saw something while browsing on Facebook on how baths are disgusting as your just bathing in your own filth, followed by many people commenting on how your supposed to shower after having a bath to clean yourself. I obviously wash myself with shower gel while in the bath but this made me think.... are baths hygienic?! Am I a filthy pig for bathing without showering after???

Grin @SomeonesSomeone

Some people are ridiculous. How on earth did we survive before houses had showers in them?

The art of not being filthy is all in the rinse. For humans and for dishes

Just how dirty are you when you get in the bath minisoksmakehardwork?

Babies have baths (and poo and pee in them) and survive - Amazing !

RedSheep73 · 30/10/2019 17:20

My grandparents used to have this argument in 1983. Do you feel dirty when you get out of the bath? do you smell? (other than shower-gelly!)
If not, how dirty can you possibly be?

barearsedloverofthigh · 01/11/2019 13:37

Ah Dangly, common sense prevails. You sound like a smart (and scrupulously clean) cookie! Have you ever considered entering a competition on MN? I'm sure you'd win hands down, or is it up? Or in the biscuit tin?

DanglyWitchesTitofThigh · 01/11/2019 15:41

Funny you should mention me winning a MN competition Bare, I just happen to have won one and my life changing winnings are winging their way to me post haste!

I shall be buying an island soon with the proceeds, but first I must set fire to myself in case there are any germs residing on me as I have just had a bath in my own filth!

BeerandBiscuits · 01/11/2019 15:50

Don't often have a bath but when I do I rinse off with hand held shower.
Not because I think baths are unhygenic but I have to get rid of all traces of soap or I get itchy skin.
I never use shower gel because it's impossible to completely rinse off.

Applesanbananas · 01/11/2019 15:52

I shower first to clean myself then have a bath so that way I'm not laying in my own filth and then just rinse myself down afterwards

What a waste of water

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/11/2019 15:54

I prefer showers or Asian style bucket baths for cleanliness rather than submersive bathing. Unless you are cleaning your feet / shit traces prior to getting in I don’t see how you can’t get a UTI.

DontCallMeShitley · 01/11/2019 16:16

Nothing short of a boiling shower with a bleach spray and wire wool for me. Then I burn the towels.

Then I have a bath that has been sterilised with flames and filled with antiseptic, rinse off and finish with a flamethrower, destroy the bathmat and do not touch anything in the house.

ChristmasFluff · 01/11/2019 16:42

I no longer have a bath or shower in my home, I have invested in an industrial-size autoclave so that my filth is completely obliterated. And as for hair - well, that stuff is a pure nest of bacteria, so I simply shave it all off daily.

I salute those who have thought of wire wool and a flamethrower though - I feel positively minging now having read of how I am falling down in my hygiene.

imundecided · 01/11/2019 17:18

@DontCallMeShitley @ChristmasFluff I laughed out loud at both of your comments!! Definitely gonna shave my head daily and bath in antiseptic from now on to make for my filthy bathing ways

I like to think I’m not really that dirty after a day... but sometimes me and my partner share bath water 🤣 oops

Ginfordinner · 01/11/2019 20:50

Absolutely loving your contributions to this bonkers thread @barearsedloverofthigh. @DanglyWitchesTitofThigh, @SomeonesSomeone and @ChristmasFluff. They have given me a good laugh

You are being utterly ridiculous GrumpyHoonMain. Unless you are disgustingly filthy you aren’t lying in your own filth. Funnily enough people my own age (60) grew up in houses where the only means of having a thorough wash was a bath. Most houses didn’t have showers. Neither my parents, my sister nor I have had a UTI. Tiny babies don’t get showered either.

YouFellAsleeep · 01/11/2019 21:23

I have a quick shower after a bath, but my hair is quite long so not sure how else I’d wash it just in a bath?! I love a really hot bath to lie back and relax but mostly only have a bath in the winter when it’s cold!

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 01/11/2019 21:38

lots of people dont even own showers

my house being one of them and many of the houses in my village as well

i bath twice a day, swim 3 times a week so dont even get the chance to be dirty enough to sit in my filth, especially with all the lush bath stuff i use

BuildBuildings · 01/11/2019 21:48

People have been bathing for 1000s of years. I think it's fine!

trinity0097 · 01/11/2019 21:50

I don’t think washing hair in the bath allows you to rinse it properly, but otherwise each to their own!

Meruem · 01/11/2019 21:52

I much prefer a bath over a shower and feel a whole lot cleaner after a bath. To use a PP’s dish analogy. If you have a dish with baked on food on it and you give it a two minute rinse under the tap, it won’t be clean, you need to soak it for a period of time. This “filth” argument is just ridiculous. How many of us are really “filthy” when we go to shower or bath? Plus surely everyone rubs themselves off with a trowel after a bath? So any soap or skin debris will be rubbed off anyway.

Meruem · 01/11/2019 21:52

Towel not trowel!

IndieTara · 01/11/2019 21:55

God I'd love a bath but I can't get in or out so showers all the way for me

BareKneesDeCourcy · 02/11/2019 00:55

Nanny rolls me up into a ball and pops me in the washing machine on a 3 hour 90° bleach wash, during which time she fumigates the house.

It’s a lovely refreshing way to start the day.
