Second hand toys

mamatoizzywizzy · 29/10/2019 19:18

My in-laws keep buying second hand toys from Facebook marketplace for our 8month old. I use the site a lot for stuff too but am picky and am a bit funny about toys and things that would go in a child's mouth - ok plastic can be detolled but soft toys with batteries are not so easy to clean and can't be machine washed.
Should I just ignore it for an easy life !?

Ignore. It'll do wonders for your kid's immune system.

Soft unwashable toys - meh if in crap condition. Otherwise 2nd hand toys are brilliant.

Camomila · 29/10/2019 19:26

I'd check if you can take the battery pack out and then put them in the washing machine. You can with some of them.

Maneandfeathers · 29/10/2019 19:31

Wouldn’t bother me at all.

I get loads of things from marketplace or friends, much better than it all going to landfill after one use!

My parents are exactly the same and although they generally buy more stuff than my kids need I say thanks and am grateful as it’s they are being kind. It’s not worth falling out with them over. My parents live 200 miles away, my dad is disabled and it’s their way of over compensating for not seeing them as much as they’d like.

I buy nearly all clothes and toys secondhand. Disposable is destroying the planet.

That said, my parents tend to buy pretty decent stuff and actively find out what their grandchildren would like. My mother in law buys my kids shitty 50p well used teddies from charity shops and I tend to give them back to charity. That may be because I dislike her and I love my parents though! Again, I wouldn’t fall out with her over it though.

Meh, wouldn't bother me in the slightest, kids put all sorts in their own mouths!
What would you do if you go to baby group/toddler groups?
Loads of communal toys being passed around there.
YABU and a bit PFB, but I'm not judging too harshly as I remember the baby years well and used to get a bit like this myself as well over things lol

Give them a surface wash. I can understand the feeling but it really wont do any harm, plus is better for the world and finances!

FrowningFlamingo · 29/10/2019 19:46

Not much can grow on a dry surface, plastic or soft. So I wouldn’t worry about it.
Supposedly popping them in the freezer for a few days also helps but I’m not sure there’s actually any evidence for that.

Idontlikeitsomuch · 29/10/2019 19:47

Second hand toys are great. We bought loads. But I wouldn't buy soft toys with batteries that I can't make sure it's clean. Can you tell in-laws about your worries and avoid certain types?

Elieza · 29/10/2019 20:02

Tell them to only get stuff you can machine wash.
