OP posts:
Desiderata · 16/08/2007 21:06

Does he work in the daytime?

NadineBaggott · 16/08/2007 21:07

hmmm, yes depends how late he carries on. If he's working all day I think you have to give a little leeway

DANCESwithDumbledore · 16/08/2007 21:08

NO, YABU. My neighbour does it too, it is annoying, yes he does work in the day but NO I don't care if that's the only time he has to do it so there...bleeurgh (on screen raspberry)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2007 21:08

He's self employed - he works when he likes.

OP posts:
LelsandZaffy · 16/08/2007 21:08

What is he doing?? If it is drilling/banging I want be defo. knocking on the door!!

REIDmylips · 16/08/2007 21:09

No, i dont think you are. Our neighbours like to play 'who can pound up and down the stairs as many times as possible' most evenings. Which really winds me and dh up. luckily a 'sold' sign went up outside their house last week

Idobelieveinfairies · 16/08/2007 21:21

YANBU-weekends are for DIY!

We have noisy neighbours too..but ours are because of alcohol and the pubs closing...and their hot tub that vibrates through my whole house. They also seem to have some sort of bell that they ring when playing a game...don't know what game it is but it has rounds and that is when this bell is rung.

EXTREMELY ANNOYING NOISY NEIGHBOURS DO ME HEAD IN!

trixymalixy · 16/08/2007 21:22

erm, people are entitled to do a reasonable amount of DIY in the evenings as long as he stops at a reasonable time.

Looking at the time of your post though I would say he was being unreasonable, 9 is far too late.

Lorayn · 16/08/2007 21:23

It depends really, if its the only time he can do it, and he doesn't stop too late, then yes YABU, but if it is often, and he continues til late into the night then no YANBU, remember to people with no children 9pm is not really that late, maybe you could have a quiet word and ask him to keep it to a reasonable hour, say up until 8:30ish?
Also self-employed doesn't mean he works whenever he wants, if you were a self-employed block paver you could only work daytime hours, so would not be being unreasonable to do home 'stuff' in the evening, it depends on his job really.

Scotia · 16/08/2007 21:43

My next door neighbour works on (and revs) his bloody motor bike every night. I had to hold my husband back the night he started at 1am!

It's not unreasonable to want a bit of peace and quiet at 9pm.

SofiaAmes · 16/08/2007 21:45

Have you tried asking him nicely if he can do it a little earlier. Being a bloke, he may not even have twigged that it's not a reasonable time.

Emprexia · 16/08/2007 21:49

No, you are definitely NOT being unreasonable.

My neighbours nickname is "DIY Dan" for the very reason you are complaining, we have to deal with him hammering, banging and drilling at any time of the day from 7am til 10.30pm.

We also had to deal with it non-stop for two years after his girlfriend moved in.

DH & I have developed nervous ticks and our walls have dents from where we've banged them to yell at the d*ck to STFU with his DIYing.

I'll help you de-ball your neighbour if you help with mine.

Scotia · 16/08/2007 21:49

My neighbour has children who come to stay with him most weekends. He doesn't make a racket when they are there.

In other ways he is a nice neighbour, just not very considerate in the evenings. The 1am incident was a one-off - so far anyway.

Lorayn · 16/08/2007 21:56

I just remembered my neighbours dog!! They shove it in the garden from 6:30 on a sunday morning, and it barks continuously. I shouted out of the window this week to 'shut that fucking dog up' low and behold they took it indoors (so if they heard me, they must have heard their dog )Maybe, a little 'will you stfu my kids are trying to sleep' will do the job??

harpsichordcarrier · 16/08/2007 21:57

QV I knew this would be your thread
how very very tiresome

oddjobgirl · 16/08/2007 21:58

Figure out when he's asleep and get your drill along with any tamborines and other musical instruments and instruct all DCs to play. Ideally record it and repeat just as you see him sitting down in the garden - he should get the message

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2007 22:05

Extremely so, HC

Sofia, reasoning, and a sense of neighbourly conduct hasnt worked before now. In fact, when their middle son attempted to vandalise our car, and we knocked on their door to inform them of this (rather than ringing the police), he squared up to DP (who was there with our DD who was 3 at the time), and she screeched obscenities.

They are a bunch of cocks.

So a winning smile isn't going to work then?

NadineBaggott · 16/08/2007 22:09

OMG - in that case you are definitely NOT being unreasonable - he sounds like a knob!

Lorayn · 16/08/2007 22:10

I was trying to see both sides here, but after reading that, no YANBU, also I have no idea what to suggest unless it involves making a complaint against them.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2007 22:14

no bubble, not likely. Although i have accidentally flashed my tits at him. It got his attention for a nanosecond before I realised he was in his garden and ducked down from the window

I'll stick a photo in my profile.....show you what we often have to put up with....hang on.....

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2007 22:21

For a short period only....in my profile......the morning after the night before....a pretty common occurrence.

Grrrrr , no, YAdefinatelyNBU! My neighbour is a bugger for this kind of thing. Since we moved in 10 years ago he has been doing up his house, but does he get it all done as quickly as possible?? Oh noooo not him, 10 years later and still going strong. He is amazingly stupid as although he knows we have a baby, he starts anytime between 10am and 3pm (usually 3) and has worked up until 8pm until recently. I wouldn't be so annoyed, but he's "disabled" (although not so disabled that he can't stand up a ladder knocking plaster off a wall while i'm trying to get dd to sleep in the room next to him) and home all day.

Bubble99 · 16/08/2007 22:24

I get the idea.

Is that him asleep/passed out on the bench?

I'm assuming those aren't coke cans on the table.

I think the car on bricks is missing, though?

Bubble99 · 16/08/2007 22:24

Are they renting? Is there a landlord somewhere?
