Am I going to regret it? Its only cost me £8.98 including a month free of unlimited music and a month free prime, I will try to add the link for anyone else who wants to take the plunge!

Brilliant, if you don't mind being spied on in your own home and paying for the privilege!

Henhophouse · 29/10/2019 16:36

This couldn’t look more like an ad if you’d tried

Waveysnail · 29/10/2019 16:37

Mine lives in dc1 bedroom so cant imagine it hears anything thrilling except for gaming chatter

Geminijes · 29/10/2019 16:46

If you have nothing to hide then what does it matter?

It's not as if they are going to listen to every individual conversation. More likely, they listen out for certain key words.

timeforawine · 29/10/2019 16:50

I love my Alexa, i ask her the weather, she turns on my heating and lights as she is connected to Nest and Phillips Hue.
Music on command is good and while the dot speaker isn't great we've connected her to a bluetooth speaker.
If she listens in on us she'll be very bored :-D

bobstersmum · 29/10/2019 16:51

@henhophouse not an ad but I see what you mean!
I have worried about the spying thing, but, we all have smart phones and lots of things I imagine that have the ability to listen in. I think this might be useful for the kids, instead of asking me ridiculous questions, they can ask her!

TSSDNCOP · 29/10/2019 16:56

Ask her to tell you a joke and read audibles to you whilst you make dinner.

FFSnotanotherone · 29/10/2019 16:58

I don't think 'If you have nothing to hide then what does it matter?' holds water anymore when you look at the change happening in the world and those in charge and their agendas.

bobstersmum · 29/10/2019 17:15

I honestly swore I'd never have one, but most people do seem to have them and like I say a lot of other stuff is capable of listening anyway. The reviews of it seem really good! Dh said why can't you just use Siri? But I think this does more? Any tips will be welcome, the kids are really excited!

You can play games with her like Pointless, Beat The Intro etc. Good fun for the family or if you've got friends round.

user1471530109 · 29/10/2019 17:17

So, OP, do I need to be a prime member first? I can't see how to add it to basket.

I have a dot actually. But I reckon my eldest would like one in her room...

bobstersmum · 29/10/2019 17:41

I tried out on dhs account as we already have prime and it came up as 34.99, so I tried it on my account which i only have to link with the kindle and it worked, you have to select the basic dot echo not the one with the display and then select charcoal. I am assuming it only works if you have not already got prime? I'm not too sure.

I love Alexa. I am a cancer patient and I get very tired - so just asking her for news, music without having to turn anything on, is great.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/10/2019 17:47

I love the Our Groceries app/skill combo - I can add things to the shopping list and it transfers to the app in my phone. You can categorise and have multiple lists, too geek

bobstersmum · 29/10/2019 17:57

I love these suggestions!
@punkatheart I hope everything goes well for you Flowers

It's a long term thing, sadly - incurable lymphoma - but thank you for your sweet comment. Have a lovely evening.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 29/10/2019 18:05

We have one. My children ask her to fart.
Anyone listening isn't going to get much information out of us, it's all fart noises.

Punkatheart · 29/10/2019 18:58

It's good fun - although when she starts, she can't seem to stop. Made me giggle.

Drizzzle · 29/10/2019 19:02

Yes YABU!

Savingforarainyday · 29/10/2019 19:08

Mine sends me to sleep with nature noises Smile

EdHelpPls · 29/10/2019 19:11

I said I wouldn’t. Now we have 2 though I switch them off quite often 😳 and I’m trying to decide between an Alexa or a google home for my teen. She has a google phone.

I mostly use it for timers/alarms and playing my audible books and podcasts. I could def live without them but it’s just one of those nice wee extras. For that price Why wouldn’t you try it?!

Handsnotwands · 29/10/2019 19:17

I’m wholly unaware of what they actually do. Without having to fork out for extra plugs or light bulbs or whatnot.

And can they link to your bose music system? That’s a bit niche. I’ll have a google...

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/10/2019 19:25

If you have nothing to hide then what does it matter?

That's the biggest pile of bollocks ever written.

MakeItRain · 29/10/2019 19:53

I love my Alexa. I always said I wouldn't have one but then I ended up with a free one. I get it to play me radio 2 or 4, and virtually any song or album I want from Amazon music. I've gone through all my old secondary school "records", university albums from the 80s, and then music from the 90s to current stuff. I have wonderful nostalgic hours of listening! I love it.

TricklBOO · 29/10/2019 19:57

Also go to bed with sleep noises. And wake up with a gentle alarm, fun greeting and local weather report.
