Charities

I'm sat watching tv and the adverts are full of both water aid and the child sponsor charity. It breaks my heart to see them. At uni we had a professor who conducted research on the psychology of charity advertising and it was very interesting reading. Essentially advertising for charities predominantly used negative emotions such as guilt and sadness to encourage contributions. There are now more positive spins to some but many remain the same.

My AIBU to ask if you regularly support charities and if so which one(s)? Dds often ask if we can sign up to water aid. I know that lots of the money doesn't actually get through to the people we think it's for but I'd like to help a couple of charities if I can. There are so many though and I don't know which ones are best in terms of actual help, which ones get the least donations and therefore need more people to donate, which are the most ethical ie no corruption etc.

I support a local women's refuge here as that's close to my heart but want to help further afield.

Tbh I really don’t like these adverts.
There’s one channel I watch frequently and the ad breaks are back to back charity appeals, all showing harrowing footage and one for a donkey sanctuary which shamelessly targets pensioners, trying to convince them to sponsor a donkey for all of their family and friends.

I think giving to charity (if you are in a position to do do) is important and that kindness should be taught to children. We donate monthly to 3 charities which are personal to us (not gonna name them).

However, I absoloutley can’t abide ‘guilt’ advertising and honestly believe it should be banned! The cost of these type of adverts is significant and whether they ‘raise more’ or not - guilt tripping adverts isn’t what charities should be spending their funds on!
