Advice for reusable nappies

MummyToBe89 · 28/10/2019 15:47

I’m looking for advice on reusable nappies please. Our first child is due and I really don’t want to be putting 10(ish?) nappies a day in to the landfill.

I went on the nappy lady but I’m still confused.

Can anybody suggest a good brand and if they used the reusable inserts?

I’m not sure what information you’d need but we live in a flat without radiators so everything gets dried on a clothes horse or in the garden when it’s summer. We do have a drier we could use if needed.

Please help a confused first time mum to be!

Agree with just giving it a go- it is all made to seem much harder than it is! Would suggest buying a second hand bundle on eBay / equivalent- it’s a good way to find out what works if there isn’t a nappy library near you.
I have a mix of pop ins and Charlie banana.
Both work well, no leaks, use a booster at night.
Dry well outside but I live somewhere warm and dry.
I also use cheeky wipes which are great- much better than disposable wipes.

And as people said- occasional use of disposable is fine- if we are away for a couple of days so be it. But once you get going it is really not that hard- it just is your normal!
Good luck with your baby.

I use bambino miosolo with hemp boosters. DS is nearly 9 months and thinks weeing is an Olympic sport! I use disposable overnight as he is such a heavy wetter.

Two piece pockets are great for quick drying but bambino mio one piece, despite getting a lot of negativity are a good all rounder and not too bad at drying. I don't tumble dry, generally would wash in the day and leave them a night to catch warmer draft with one of those ceiling airers to be dry by most mornings.

*on bad weather days. They do better outside to dry

@Knittedfairies Aw, that's so lovely. Smile

I loved the terry squares. There's something so satisfying about knowing the different folds.

Even though a lot of nappy brands say they are suitable from birth, we found that most of them didnt really fit until around 12 weeks.

We started with little lambs for newborn, and still use their bamboo for night use, with a pocket wrap with an extra insert.

Daytime we have a mix of bambino mio and littles and bloomz pocket nappies. Tbh for the price, I much prefer the littles and bloomz. I bought some extra bamboo pads from little lamb that I use with the thicker inserts to increase absorbancy.

I used usable for all four of my dc (I guess there’s a small amount of offsetting going on there Hmm). I would say wait to buy until you’re settled for two reasons.

Firstly, new borns can run through nappies. I counted dd4’s nappies one day (yes, I’m that boring)... she managed 29 dirty nappies in a 24 hour period.

And secondly, you don’t know how you’ll feel after having the baby. Reusables are more work, although only a little. But that extra amount of work can be enough to tip you over the edge. And if you’ve bought the reusables they will be looming in the corner, adding guilt into the mix.

We use Little Lambs - great, not too expensive, and do the job without leaking! Cotton for day and bamboo for night. We pair with a variety of wraps - Little Lambs ones, TotsBots wraps and most recently got some Close Pop-In wraps to try. But don't get swayed by pretty prints - focus on a nappy that works, and if you can buy something pretty that's a bonus.

The Little Lambs fleecy liners are great, I would recommend those above disposable liners (I don't really get the point of these, they feel nasty and don't seem to lie flat, unlike the fleecy liners, so you end up with poo on the nappies themselves).

Also not sure if others have mentioned but definitely use cloth wipes, they are excellent!

Some people mentioned getting a nappy bucket for the dirties. We did this initially but now have 3 extra large wet bags that can hold approx 10 dirty nappies each. The whole bag can go in the washing machine each time (unlike the bucket which always need cleaning out - what a grim job!) and I find the bag is better at containing smells than the bucket.

Finally - not sure if anyone mentioned but see if your local council offers a grant. Mine offered £40.

I used generic Egyptian cotton prefolds and separate wraps. They fitted from about 3 weeks

Me and my partner use the bambino mio miosolos, really easy to use especially for first timers as that was the first reusable nappy brand we bought! Once you have got used to one brand you can start exploring other brands.

We needed to add a booster once LO got older which worked really well, no leaks. They don't take too long to dry naturally either. Hope that helps!

I would suggest biodegradable nappies until your babies passes 8-9 pounds. Then go for reuseable as you will find they fit better and are less prone to leaks

All your not-so-subtle plugging for bambooco - you've posted the same stuff on several threads now.
