And a waste of court time, prison officers time and an unnecessary squandering of public money all round. Let him out. Ridiculous.

Is there a link?

PhonicTheHedgehog · 28/10/2019 08:31

How high will those prison walls have to be to keep him in?

snowbear66 · 28/10/2019 08:31

People get 200 hours of community service for a lot more serious offences.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/10/2019 08:33

Yes, I think so too

It really smacks of "don't touch big business/the city or we will make an example of you"

People who assault people in the street in muggings don't get that

Fuckenstein · 28/10/2019 08:36

Considering the punishment for other violent crimes or drug dealing, I think this is a bit excessive.

MincedOath · 28/10/2019 08:38

Unless he has a shitload of prior convictions I think that's excessive.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/10/2019 08:39

I agree I've known sex offenders get suspended sentences so this really seems to state we value buildings and corporations over children

Captaindaddydog · 28/10/2019 08:40

He broke a High Court order and the jail term was for contempt of court. His family are saying he is a hero. I think a prison term is justified but 6 months is excessive.

Plexie · 28/10/2019 08:42

According to this article in the Guardian it was a civil prosecution, not a criminal one.

Innocent people have been killed by others jumping from buildings. Others are left traumatised by watching someone die and a huge amount of money will have been used putting police and emergency services in place in case the numpty fell. They’re sending out a message to people like him. He’s the one with a sense of self importance. ‘Look at me, I’m going to flout your rules because I’m so bloody fantastic.’

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 28/10/2019 08:44

One of my colleagues had his teeth knocked out by a service user and he only got a fine and suspended sentence of 6 months.

It stinks and I agree it's all about not pissing off the people in power.

wanderings · 28/10/2019 08:48

Will the XR lot who caused far more disruption get similar sentences?

What I wish is that massive means-tested fines could be used more, as well as prison sentences, so that wealthy career criminals/politicians/bankers/footballers who think they're above the law are paying a smidgeon of the cost of keeping them in prison.

Plexie · 28/10/2019 08:49

And according to this article he was actually jailed for contempt of court, as he breached a High Court order banning people from climbing the building.

Butchyrestingface · 28/10/2019 08:49

It is excessive.

On the other hand, if you were his mother, would you not be happy he’s guaranteed to be kept out of mischief/breaking his own neck for a few months?

longwayoff · 28/10/2019 08:49

@fancynew. Rampant ego or not, a 6 month sentence is absurd. If people are to be locked up for that, the streets will be empty.

Well deserved. His mum has just been on ITV saying how proud of him she is. She would be proud if he fell and died I am sure.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 28/10/2019 08:55

This fool could have killed himself. More importantly, the use of emergency services if he had injured himself could have prevented somebody else from getting the help they needed for something that wasn't their fault.
He knew he was at risk of getting in trouble for doing this. He thought it was worth the risk. He's now paying the penalty. I doubt that he's learnt his lesson as he has only said he won't climb a building in the UK again, not anywhere else.
His parents must be frantic every time he does something this stupid.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 28/10/2019 09:00

My view is slightly excessive but given how much it must have cost the public purse to bring the court action they had to make an example of him.He might have been climbing for fun or whatever but what he did was beyond dangerous. He could have been a terrorist who would have known? But more to the point he has shown everyone how he managed to make a mug on what should be the most secure of buildings.Embarrassing security issues/breeches alone will not have gone down well for the Shard....silly boy! Now anyone with any sense would use him and his skill set and employ him in security and defense work! After he has shown due remorse for his actions!!!!!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2019 09:13

GettingABitDesperateNow · 28/10/2019 09:15

Yeah it seems to be more than you get if you rape someone

bobstersmum · 28/10/2019 09:16

It's absurd.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 28/10/2019 09:17

Excessive sentence

Shows major security lapses fir what is supposed to be a very secure building...for anyone who jadbt been you have to go through scanning machines like at airports

adaline · 28/10/2019 09:17

YANBU, it's daft. He's just being made an example of.

You can rob someone, assault them or get caught dealing drugs and get a lesser sentence.

Pootles34 · 28/10/2019 09:17

Not only could he have killed himself, what do you think would have happened to the people he landed on? He could very easily have killed several other people.

BlouseAndSkirt · 28/10/2019 09:17

“He broke a High Court order and the jail term was for contempt of court. His family are saying he is a hero. I think a prison term is justified but 6 months is excessive”

This.
