To consider giving this as a Christmas present?

My sister is pregnant with her first baby, due in February. I don't have any kids, so don't know a great deal about caring for babies.

I've been thinking about what to get her and her partner for Christmas. I wanted to avoid getting her anything to do with the baby, because it's her Christmas present. Anyway, I've thought of a couple of nice things for her that she'll like.

However, I came across an automatic bottle maker which makes the baby's bottle in 8 seconds, and which can be connected to their phones via WiFi and made to make a bottle from anywhere. I was considering getting both her and her boyfriend one each to be opened together at Christmas, so they could keep one downstairs and one in the bedroom. I thought that might be nice so they don't need to be trailing up and down stairs in winter in the middle of the night to do the nighttime feeds.

Is this a really bad idea? As I say, I don't have kids so I don't know if it's practical, and I don't know if an expectant mother/father would be upset to receive something baby related for Christmas? As I say, it won't be her only gift.

AIBU to consider it?

One of the best late pregnancy birthday gifts I got were decent boots. I walked for freakin miles with that pram. The baby is almost 8. I still have the boots, still wear them. Proper love em.

Other good gifts? Decent thermos mug... You never get a hot drink other wise! Lovely pj's and socks. Night feeds can be chilly, a voucher for a haircut. I never seemed to get my haircut when I had a baby, until one day I realised I was virtually rapunzel. Both times.

You sound like a lovely sister.

How about a nice afternoon tea somewhere before the baby arrives?

They’re the best inventions ever, have been recommended to me by LOADS of professionals, and are a heaven sent gift.
Fair enough if you decide not for xmas OP, but they’re a bloody great gift and I love them Grin

It sounds like a lovely idea, especially if you are sure she won’t be breastfeeding. However I think a Christmas present should be for her as a person rather than as a Mum (think of a wife receiving a hoover). I would opt to buy something more personal - maybe a lovely warm wrap that she can use whilst pregnant and then as something to keep her cosy during night feeds and the sofa days of early motherhood.

Imagine if there was an invention that made milk instantly, at the perfect temperature, tailor made for each baby, would decrease the risk of breast cancer and childhood obesity....oh wait 🤔

Wow, patronising AND ignorant.

I suppose with all that righteousness in there, there isn't any room to imagine a world where some women are too ill or underdeveloped to breastfeed, or like OP's sister, have a choice over how they use their bodies and have already chosen what is going to work best for them.

Isn't it wonderful that we have options.

When my daughter in law was pregnant I bought them a dulce gusto machine. She has since said it was the best gift ever! They got a coffee made extra quickly without boiling kettles, perfect for a quick caffeine boost

LannisterLion1 · 28/10/2019 14:25

I wouldn't bother. You can DIY just as easy with cooled boiled water and boiling water. No need to waste money on a machine.

Now a coffee maker or Netflix subscription....Grin

@pooboobsleeprepeat ODFOD. Do you think posting shit like this will encourage anyone who’s reluctant to try breastfeeding? Or just put them off for life lest they become a self righteous prick
