to ask for Sinusitis advice

Apologies for probably the most boring thread in history... but i feel so ill with it. Cant think straight, feel exhausted, can barely hear, pain and congestion in sinuses, persistent and irritated cough (postnatal drip according to dr in prev years) feel a bit sick, headachey, smell and taste gone. Have taken all usual stuff...
Have felt like crap for days now. I suffer with sinuses as soon as I get a cold and also during hayfever season.

Any advice very welcome please. Feel like crying! So pathetic I know

I had surgery last year on polyps after having sinusitis for years and post nasal drip which caused asthma. It has been life changing. Was fobbed off for so many years by doctors until saw a great consultant.

I would definitely ask for a referral if you get it often.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/10/2019 20:10

I had surgery on my deviated septum and I could breathe better within days than I had done in the months before, even though I had been told it could be 3 months to get the full benefit. The first time I had a cold after surgery was a revelation, at no point did I feel like I had stopped a cricket ball with my face.

Once it’s infected you really need antibiotics.

I have chronic sinusitis and the only thing that keeps them at bay is a steroid nasal spray.

cjpark · 27/10/2019 20:23

Worth trying Sterimar? its a saline spray that sprays up your nose and real helps flush the sinuses.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 27/10/2019 21:13

Miserable face ache you meanConfusedI feel for you.

I get through with Regular analgesia, usually paracetamol and brufen 4 hourly plus Sudafed (or a generic version).

I find steamy showers help as does a hot flannel on my face.

It is a case of getting through until it goes though.

Nealmed sinus rinse worked for me in a couple of days after weeks of pain during pregnancy

OverByYer · 27/10/2019 22:41

Sorry to hijack the thread but can I ask if any of you get a pulsating sensation in your sinuses? Sometimes In my upper nostril or higher up

mrshectic · 27/10/2019 22:45

Loads of pineapple! It has something in it that helps break it done within your sinuses.
I suffer with it pretty badly, but it really helps.
Also with the tip of your thumbs either side of your nose on the eye socket, if u apply pressure upwards that gives pretty instant relief... but a pain to keep doing it for long periods 😬😕

mrshectic · 27/10/2019 22:46

And another thing I tried....which was fantastic, but really weird to do... was a nasal rinse/flush. U can get them from boots, has a squeeze bottle and special powder to add to water to flush through the sinuses.... it was amazingly effective! X

RaynaJaymes · 27/10/2019 22:47

I had the surgery two years ago, also had a deviated septum. I’ll be honest that it hasn’t cleared the attacks completely but much much less now
Sinusitis really is the pits
Push for an ENT referral

ultrablue · 27/10/2019 22:48

All of the above, especially the menthol crystals and patting some Vicks on the skin around the sinuses helps me. Obviously test a small amount on your skin first. It will sting but I find it helps

Lots of good advice here, thanks all. Snorting apple cider vinegar is my personal favourite. It can be a bit harrowing but has worked for me (although I wasn't as bad as you sound)earthclinic.com/ailments/sinus-infection-natural-remedies/apple-cider-vinegar/

Twinkletoenails · 28/10/2019 10:23

I caved in and went to the drs this am. On antibs now. But looking online for a nasal rinse kit. Thanks for all advice. Feel less alone Brew

I take an antihistamine which dries out the mucus so I don't have the drip and the coughing. It's used to dry out streaming nose/eyes sufferers of hay fever so works more or less the same way for sinusitis mucus production. And then I tag team with the nasal spray. It makes it bearable for the few days til it goes.

I used to be cautious about the rebound effect of nasal sprays but I've given up on worrying about it now tbh. I'm lazy and won't get it out of my bag unless I really need it, so I do use it sparingly and haven't found it to be a problem if I need to use it for a couple of weeks to get to sleep.

ginghamstarfish · 28/10/2019 11:15

I use the NeilMed Sinus Rinse, I'm sure it's available on Amazon etc. It's very easy to use and I think it's effective.

tillytrotter1 · 28/10/2019 11:17

I get sinus problems occasionally and it mainly affects my teeth, I would gladly let anyone remove half my teeth without pain-killers it's so bad. Apparently it's to do with the position of the long nerves in my teeth. Reading this thread looking for solutions!

ElsieMc · 28/10/2019 11:27

You have my sympathies op. Mine once got so bad that I went to my dentist to beg him to remove my upper teeth. He x-rayed me, told me it was my sinuses and prescribed antibiotics . This was years ago mind you. Wow, what a difference so very quickly. Please don't suffer op.

Some good suggestions for home care here. I found steaming my face over a bowl with a towel over my head putting olbas oil in the water soothed a bit and "loosened" everything. That said, it is no substitute for the correct medication so please see your GP.
