I went to the Smash hits office in the mid 1980s, to interview the editor for my thesis, everyone working there were lovely.. even when i accidentally set fire to the waste paper bin with my not quite put out fag Grin

BestIsWest · 27/10/2019 19:09

Isn’t Ski Sunday still on. In the winter?

I gave up going to Girl Guides because of TOTP.

And my DC will never experience a family fallout on Christmas Day because TOTP Christmas special with all the no 1s from the past year clashed with Christmas dinner being ready.

BestIsWest · 27/10/2019 19:10

FAB 208. I couldn’t wait for Fridays because my best friend brought Fab 208 into school to swap with my Jackie. It was much cooler.

I remember Heat being more irreverent too in its early days - must’ve been about 18 yrs ago?? (Off to google).

Pinkarsedfly · 27/10/2019 20:06

I bloody loved Jackie.

Singlebutmarried · 27/10/2019 20:17

Smash hits poll winners party where cater USM took out the schofe with a rugby tackle

The letter always signed by then man who wrote the lyrics to axl f’

Didn’t one of the editors go on to set up heat magazine?

ChicCauldron · 27/10/2019 20:48

That moment where Schofield was taken out was discussed on a thread a while back and someone posted the link - while I remembered the tackle I had forgotten that Schofield was dressed as a Knight at the time!

Might have been Mark Frith, the editor of Smash Hits in my day was probably David Hepworth. Read a copy of SH on that link someone provided - it was great, bit like Private Eye but with song lyrics!

Important question: when was TOTP on a Friday? I remember it as Thursday.

Does that make me old or not that old?

twilightcafe · 27/10/2019 21:07

You all know TOTP is being repeated on BBC4 on Thursday and Friday nights? It's up to August 1988.

BestIsWest · 27/10/2019 21:08

Old sorry Squigean, it was always on a Thursday at least up until 1982. After that I was too old for it.

Squigean · 27/10/2019 21:15

Did I say I remembered it as a Thursday? I accidentally wrote the wrong day. I meant Friday. Honest.

Seashell80 · 27/10/2019 21:19

Aah a happy time perusing those back issues of Smash Hits! Looking up lyrics on google is not the same !

BaronessBomburst · 28/10/2019 06:37

TOTP was on a Thursday!
What is all this Friday nonsense?

Squigean · 28/10/2019 07:14

Moved to Friday in 96 (according to WIki). Making it 34 years on Thursdays and 10 years on a Friday.

As the 90s was only last decade (it was!! no denying this please.) It makes sense that lots of people think it as a Thursday thing.

PositiveVibez · 28/10/2019 07:20

My dad used to get paid on a Thursday (go and pick up his wage packet with actual money in a brown envelope and his payslip) and we used to go for the big shop.

Thursday was a quick tea, so mum and dad had gammon with a ring of pineapple on and we used to have pizza whilst watching TOTP.

Apologies, but I can't even remember TOTP being on on a Friday!

Ahh twas an institution in our house.

Charley50 · 28/10/2019 08:07

It was good that it was on a Thursday in the 70s and 80s, as we all got to talk about it at school on Friday. Wow betide the kid who hadn't seen last night's Top of the Pops! It was better to style it out and pretend you had.

BestIsWest · 28/10/2019 18:19

Thursday was the best day of the week.
Jackie magazine would be delivered, it was Art lesson day in school. DM would do the shopping and there would be banana baguettes with real butter and strawberry Ski yoghurt for tea while watching Scooby Doo and then at 7pm, TOTP.

ViciousJackdaw · 28/10/2019 19:16

I remember Sigue Sigue Sputnik's 'frightwigs', Sir William of Idol, Mark Unpronouncablename from Big Country, a frequent reference to Lord Freddie Lucan Mercury (or something like that) and 'bleegusting'.

Charley1988 · 28/10/2019 20:05

I remember Uncle Disgusting, down the dumper, swingoriliant

Our car radio (and the bathroom radio) are permanently tuned to Absolute 80s ... And I still have my copy of the Live Aid edition of Smash Hits Smile
