Why do clothes on the clothes horse smell and tumble drier ones don't? And what can they do about it?

My husband drives me mental as he says he can never smell it when our clothes have that horrible damp smell on them! I have to rewash but he’s happy to walk around smelling of it 🤢

I sold my heated airier when I discovered the joys of a dehumidifier

Yes, it's a horrible damp smell. Clothes must be laid as flat as possible, no bunched up material...and not too closely packed together.

I hate normally airers...I got the heated airer from Lakeland...best money I've ever spent.

It's lovely here today's after monsoon-like conditions for weeks so my washing machine is on and the clothes will be dried outside on the washing line. This is the best and cheapest way to dry clothes isn't it? It's banned in lots of places in the US because it is 'unsightly'! 😳 ( or because there is no profit to be made from it?)

Recently I noticed that the washing was smelling musty, and I hate having to refashion or putting on a top to realise that body warmth releases that damping odour. In the last few weeks I have been, like a pp, ensuring that the clothes are well spun. I think one of the children had pressed the half speed button on the washer and they were sopping wet when the wash finished. I have never used that facility so couldn't work out what was going on.
I have a heated airer which is wonderful, it dries the washing really well, I really recommend them. Like other people I use the dehumidifier if the room feels damp.

One of the things I have also been trying to do is make sure I time the washing so that I am at home and free to get the clothes out of the machine as soon as they finish. I have cleaned the washing machine and scrubbed the seals etc, cleaned out the detergent drawer.
In fact, I think the way has just finished so I will leave MN. And venture out into the garden for the first time in days. I am sure everything is sodden but the sunshine will make up for that! ☀️☀️

Hang your washing outside!

queenofmycastlex · 27/10/2019 10:31

We have a heated airer for in winter/bad weather (north east Scotland) and it’s much better

DogAndCatPerson · 27/10/2019 10:33

You are probably overloading the airer, too.

SophieGiroux · 27/10/2019 10:37

I had the same problem, that sicky smell as a PP mentioned - always on black jeans, vile. Bought a dehumidifier and it's amazing, clothes dry so quickly now. Well worth the money.

Wheat2Harvest · 27/10/2019 10:59

You have said they smell but haven't specified if they smell better or worse!

If it's worse, it's because they're taking too long to dry and are getting a damp smell. On the bright side, I bet they don't shrink.
