AIBU to be annoyed with the Cattery?

I posted this in Pets but thought I meant get more responses on AIBU

Hi, not sure what I’m hoping for here but just need a rant. We booked our kitten into the Cattery the first time when they were 5 months and they shared a pen. They were absolutely fine for 4 days and we collected them. The next time we booked them in (last week) at 7 months old they were apparently horrendous. We got a phone call on holiday asking us to come and collect them as they were attacking each other (hugely out of character, they adore each other and are never apart at home). We said we can’t as we’re away for the week visiting family 300 miles away and I suggested they separate them and I will just have to pay for the 2nd pen. They said they were fully booked so they would have to find an alternate Cattery for one of the kittens but we’d have to pay for travel expenses and an extra member of staff to take them!!! I was really upset by this and we decided to return home early and pick them up. When we arrived they were in separate pens and when I said I thought you were fully booked they said it was a mistake and they aren’t, so we came for them early for no reason. The kittens seems distressed and frightened. As soon as we got them in their cage together they huddled together and started grooming each other Sad we were then told they are the most vicious kittens we have ever seen and I laughed out loud at this. They are tiny, sweet cuddly kittens who have never hissed at us or scratched us! so upset by this and dont know if I should demand by money back for the 3 days they were there?

Sorry for the rant! X

You can’t ask for your money back but it looks like they’re really not suited to cattery. Can you hire a pet sitter or home boarder next time perhaps? X

MyKingdomForBrie · 26/10/2019 23:44

Well I don't think you can 'demand' your money back as they did look after your cats, and unless they have cameras on the pens it's going to be their word against yours. I would just not use them again.

HelloGeeniee · 26/10/2019 23:50

I mean more for us having to return when it wasn’t actually necessary in the end as they weren’t fully booked. Although I’m glad I did really! X

I’d be absolutely furious that they told you they were fully booked when they weren’t, meaning you returned early, and I would definitely complain.

Could you pay a professional pet sitter next time? They seem to be a lot £10 an hour round here.

DontCallMeShitley · 27/10/2019 00:09

Review the cattery. Incompetent people should not be trusted with pets.
Are they FAB listed (not called that now but some still use it)?

Honeyroar · 27/10/2019 00:11

My cats usually adore one another, but if there is bad weather and they don't go out they seem to get cabin fever and can have pretty viscous battles. Could that have happened? When my cats get like this I have to rescue my female cat as her brother is really horrible. If they ever had to be in a cattery and they started I would be glad that they were split up (and they'd still look pleased to be back together after a small seperation).

Finchy19 · 27/10/2019 00:22

Cats don't deal with changes in environment well. When they are younger it's easier, they adapt but that gets less as they are older. Maybe look into a cat sitter instead? Then someone is checking in on your home too whilst you are away and the cats aren't totally disrupted.

Cats generally hate catteries, they're too stressful. Get a cat sitter next time

drinkygin · 27/10/2019 01:16

Leave a negative review online absolutely. I’d want to be warned about a place like this if I was considering it for my pet.

HelloGeeniee · 27/10/2019 09:23

Thanks everyone. Have no plans to go away for a while now so will definitely look at a cat sitter. We opted for a Cattery due to them being so small I wanted to make sure they were safe. I’m probably being too precious over them x

Leaving them at 7 months is fine, just book the sitter in to feed them twice a day. They will be much happier in their own home.
