First world problems, daughters leotard

Evening all, just wanting some advice on how to handle this. My daughter goes to gymnastics every week, she's turned 5 last week, about a month ago they announced there would be a display for all the gymnasts to take part in. My daughter is really excited to do it. They also said that all gymnasts must have the club leotard, £28 for sleeveless or £38 with sleeves. Dd needs a winter leotard so I've ordered her one with long sleeves. Obviously being 5 she won't be in competitions so can wear it to the weekly session. They arrived today, my partner took dd to gymnastics and was given the leotard. Got it home and it was sleeveless. I've emailed the lady that runs the gymnastics club and after trying to palm off a size smaller than I ordered, she said she accidentally sold it to someone else thinking it was sleeveless and she's emailed the parent explaining. I've told dp who said he saw the little girl trying it on and they were rolling the sleeves up, so could clearly see it has sleeves. If this little girl is anything like my daughter she'll have had it on all day today. Aibu to not really want to pay £38 for a leotard that someone's already been wearing when I've paid for brand new???

YANBU. The club made the mistake, I'd be expecting them to order in a new version of the leotard you were expecting, at their expense. Hopefully there's time for it to arrive before the show.

Ariadnepersephonecloud · 26/10/2019 19:54

I couldn't get upset about this to be honest. She gave the wrong leotards to the wrong people. Swap back, give it a quick wash and everything's sorted. Honestly it's cloth, it will wash!!!

onyabikeivy · 26/10/2019 20:17

Haha these are the two sides I keep going between, they won't be able to get another as they have to order 6 at a time so this was the last chance before the show but yeah it's no different to a few people trying on clothes in a shop on the scheme of things, but apparently you can only rinse them through in the washing machine Confused so I can't give it a proper wash ... And £38 for something that's been worn and I've got to wash

ElizaDee · 26/10/2019 20:23

Tell the woman you want a reduction and hand wash it.

onyabikeivy · 26/10/2019 20:31

Eliza they've already had the money Blush which makes me think because my daughters so desperate to do the display I've just got to go along with it.

Betty777 · 26/10/2019 20:36

She would probably have been wearing knickers under it though? And little kids don't really sweat much do they?

I would pop it in the wash and just don't tell your daughter

Witchend · 26/10/2019 20:43

How does he know it's that one he saw? You're not going to be the only one ordering a long sleeve one, rolling the sleeve up may simply be that they were too hot, or the sleeves are a bit long.

And dd has sleeveless leotard, although the rest of her club use long sleeve ones, because she's only got half an arm on one side. She's never been cold doing gym, and in fact others have said they'd prefer to have sleeveless, so I'd stick with that one.

onyabikeivy · 26/10/2019 20:52

Witchend the lady emailed and said the name of the child she had sold it to as she's in the same group as my dd. She already has a sleeveless one she wears to the group weekly, but it's not a club one and I don't want to buy another in the same size

OP posts:
onyabikeivy · 26/10/2019 20:52

Betty I think that's the way forward

OP posts:
ElizaDee · 26/10/2019 21:16

they've already had the money

Tough shit. You paid for a new item and now you are getting second hand. Due to the woman's fuck up. She can reimburse you some of the cost of a brand new leotard.

onyabikeivy · 26/10/2019 21:35

Eliza thank you, I think this is what I'm really asking. Is it reasonable to say something to them and expect it to get me anywhere or would I just be making an arse of myself

OP posts:
Lindy2 · 26/10/2019 21:53

I don't think a 5 year old would have got a leotard very dirty. I'd accept a swap and give it a wash.

What is unreasonable though IMO is charging £38 for a 5 year old's leotard. I hope it's a bloody good gymnastics class if you are paying prices like that!

ElizaDee · 26/10/2019 22:05

Of course it's reasonable.

wibdib · 27/10/2019 02:31

I would be tempted to email them back and say that as they are unable to supply you with the leotard that you ordered for the event and are unable to get one for you in time, you assume that your dd can wear her existing leotard to take part in the display... and see what their reaction is.

May well be that the other mum refuses to give up the other leotard on the basis that she asked them to get her an age 5 long sleeved one as that’s what she wants for the same reason as you; that she has paid for it, she has it and her dd has been wearing it so she is keeping it.

Have you looked on eBay (and isn’t there a site specifically for ballet and gym leotards? Sure I’ve read about it on here!). Might be able to pick one up cheaply if you’re going to have to have a second hand one anyway and pay much less than £38. Is the gym taking a massive commission to boost its profits? Seems a crazy price to think about deciding on as a choice for that age!

WhinyWa · 27/10/2019 05:06

If the child has just tried it on over knickers or clothes then I'd accept it but be annoyed. I'd not accept it if I'm going to be washing it, the kid could have worms/thrush. Yeah people are going to be all "get a grip.. this is fine" but I'd not accept a swimsuit that another adult had worn for the day that I can only cold wash.
But I'm weird.

onyabikeivy · 27/10/2019 05:44

wibdib I've been wondering this as well!! From what I understand they have just sold her this leotard, she didn't order one initially. So she could easily make it awkward, not see the email they've sent her for example and then not give it back.
I don't think eBay will help as these are a specific design with the club logo on, any second hand ones tend to be sold on in the gym as they have a rail.
The whole thing is just a money grabbing scheme to me, the display they've decided to put on and insist all the kids have the leotard. dp dropped dd off about a month ago they asked if she was doing the display I front of dd Hmm thanks for that Confused of course she wanted to do it... and they practise the display every week as a group.

Whiny I know where you're coming from, I'm tempted to use this as a way to bring up how I feel. I take my ds to a group with them on a Monday I'm thinking of saying "I'm not sure I'm happy about this, I've got a thing about other people wearing things that are meant to be new"

I really want to just pull her out of the display and not take her or my son to their groups again. It costs the same at the local pool for swimming lessons, so I'd happily move them to that.

The whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think you're massively over reacting. It was a mistake, swap back and get over yourself. This issue for me is that gym leotards are ridiculously over priced but you're making a massive drama out of a non issue.

Mumdiva99 · 27/10/2019 05:51

Unfortunately this sort of thing does go along with dance/gym/cheer etc classes. For dance it's the shows they put on...pay for a costume, pay for tickets to see the show etc

user1471539385 · 27/10/2019 05:52

All the comments about popping it in the wash... gymnastics squad leotards tend to be hand wash only. Not a problem with regard to the swap of the leotard, as a thorough hand wash is all it will ever get when your DD wears it too. Probably not worth making such a big deal. Unless the other child has done something irreversible to it (unlikely!) it will only be one wear into its lifespan, which on the grand scheme of things is not much. Just don’t put it in the washing machine, or you will be back to square one with the £38 leotard buying!

itsgettingweird · 27/10/2019 06:11

If you paid for a size X £38 long sleeved leotard and got a size Y short sleeved one priced at £28 of course you aren't unreasonable to ask for a refund of at least the difference or for what you paid for.

Personally I'd say I wanted the one I ordered and accept it's been worn for a day.

Sweetdreamer93 · 27/10/2019 07:12

So we all like recycling and avoiding waste until it comes to us and our pockets.

There is no harm done. Wash, wear, job done.

Coulddowithanap · 27/10/2019 07:36

Has your daughter tried on the sleeveless one? I'd see if she likes it then get a refund for the difference if she does. Lots of children get too hot doing gymnastics in the long sleeved leotards.

onyabikeivy · 27/10/2019 07:58

Coulddowithanap I don't want to keep the sleeveless one as she already has one that she uses for the weekly session and it exactly the same size as the one we have ordered.

I think the mum of the girl who they sold my dds leotard to brings their younger child to the group I go to tomorrow so hopefully it will be resolved sooner than I expect

OP posts:
shearwater · 27/10/2019 08:02

I would just contact the other mum and swap it. But the gym class would certainly have its card marked for causing me a bunch of arse hassle that I don't need.

onyabikeivy · 27/10/2019 10:21

shearwater think that's what I'm going to do. I think it's worse that she clearly had lied to me when she said she sold it thinking it was a short sleeved one when dp saw them trying it on the little girl and rolling the sleeves up Hmm why not just be honest and say she thought it was an extra one and they sold it
