To find Halloween utterly tedious?

Just that, really. I get why it's fun for kids, but grown adults getting excited about it, and the way everything that happens any time around Hallowe'en has to have a 'spooky' theme? casts a sidelong glance at Strictly while typing Each to their own, but... I just don't get it.

Is it just me?

I see where you're coming from, I've never made a fuss -

But I've got a 2.5 year old so would like to make more of an effort next year as he's loved the little bits related to it this year, maybe I'll turn into Halloween megafan Grin

EmperorBallpitine · 26/10/2019 19:06

I enjoy mild spooky things, black humour and silly dressing up so it is an enjoyable mini season for me.

TellySavalashairbrush · 26/10/2019 19:07

Here here op. I’m always flabbergasted at the amount of adults buying fancy dress for themselves in the lead up to Halloween and pumpkin purchases in the supermarket. Mind you I am a miserable cow and not keen on Christmas or new year either Grin

Spanglebangle · 26/10/2019 19:08

I don't understand it either. DD would love to get involved in trick or treating but I find the idea of begging house to house cringe worthy.

Drum2018 · 26/10/2019 19:12

I hate it. I'll give in to a few (3 or 4) decorations for Ds sake. Dh will bring him trick or treating. I'll be at home scowling at all the kids that call to our house - with my totally pissed off expression I won't need a mask.

missmouse101 · 26/10/2019 19:12

Totally agree. It's pathetic. Loathe the growling and clawing the air then peals of laughter as if they're so hilarious. Hmm

HotChocWithCream · 26/10/2019 19:14

I think it's a fun part of uk culture that should be embraced!

When I lived abroad (hundreds of miles away) I was on a train on my way to a Halloween party with some friends in the city and was getting some really weird uncomfortable looks from people until one of them whispered "Ah - it's Halloween abroad!" (in their own language) then the atmosphere in the carriage visibly changed to more relaxed.

I was dressed up as a black angel.

Ponoka7 · 26/10/2019 19:15

I decorate the outside of my house, just for fun and the trixk or treaters like it.

I've got a spider headband to wear when i open the door , at 52, i think I'll get away with it.

It's a bit of fun as the nighs get longer and the days colder.

Haworthia · 26/10/2019 19:15

I refuse to take my kids trick or treating.

The idea of knocking on complete strangers’ doors and then having to make small talk with them is my idea of absolute HELL.

Thankfully we live in a quiet cul de sac and no one knocks on our door either Grin

PixiKitKat · 26/10/2019 19:17

As an adult I love getting dressed up in costume for a Halloween night out. This year though I'll be home avoiding the door!

MsChatterbox · 26/10/2019 19:17

Hate it. Kids dressing up in evil and gore. Knocking on neighbours doors for sweets. Skeletons everywhere you go. Hate it!

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 26/10/2019 19:17

YABU

"I don't get Halloween" threads on MN are repetitive and dull. Same every year.

HotChocWithCream · 26/10/2019 19:18

Where I live there is an unspoken etiquette. Guisers only knock on the doors of people who have a pumpkin and/or decorations out front. That way people who don't want to participate are not bothered.

penisbeakers · 26/10/2019 19:20

Oh give over. It's fun and at least it's not that complete waste of time called Christmas where people put up with family bullshit and also put themselves in stupid debt for one day a year.

But yeah, carry on knocking it. 🙄

Windygate · 26/10/2019 19:21

I'd rather Halloween and winter Solstice than Bonfire Night and Christmas. Happy Diwali one and all.

DuggeesWoggle · 26/10/2019 19:21

It's annoying that nowadays any local attraction must be entirely Halloween themed during October half term week. It used to just be one day so of you didn't celebrate it (like me) you could just avoid that one day. Now it's everywhere for ages and you can't go anywhere in half term without it being Halloween themed. Roll on Nov 1st! Which is a shame as I really quite like October.

gwackywacky · 26/10/2019 19:22

I'm totally up for Halloween parties and fancy dres, its atmospheric, to me it always marks the beginning of winter setting in.

What I dont like is stuff like a group I go to every week, someones just written on our group messenger that to "celebrate halloween" the activity (artistic) is going to have a "spooky" theme and for us to dress up.

It's like FFS why? People are just gunna plonk on a witches hat and the activity is kinda diluted by a theme that's been shoehorned in

RuffleCrow · 26/10/2019 19:23

I quite like it but i do find the 'what are we gonna do for halloween?' Pressure a bit unneccesary given christmas is just around the corner.

cptartapp · 26/10/2019 19:23

I was never allowed to go trick or treating as a child. We live down a remote country lane so our DC have never done it either (and don't seem fussed). I shut the curtains and don't answer the door on Halloween. Just don't get it.

Doobigetta · 26/10/2019 19:24

The worst thing is the amount of plastic tat sold every year for it. And the way the whole thing has been blown up into a much bigger thing than it ever used to be in this country, purely so they can sell more plastic tat. Nobody needs it, and the planet definitely doesn’t need it.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 26/10/2019 19:25

I find October in Britain quite depressing (it suddenly gets very cold and dark, well in comparison to what I am used to). I find that jack o lanterns and pumpkin spice stuff makes it much more cheerful. Was never into Halloween before but now I always put up decorations and carve a few pumpkins while eating home baked festive treats for my own sanity. Have also gone a bit mental for Christmas. But the stretch between new year and Easter feels like forever, we really need to intrusive a festivity towards the r d of February to break up the winter a bit more.

tttigress · 26/10/2019 19:25

I'm not a fan.

Also, it seems like a colossal for people to guy a plastic costume just for one night.

Knittedbear · 26/10/2019 19:26

Doesn't bother me, I quite like these little things we have throughout the year. Yes it can be tedious, but you can choose to ignore it if you wish.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 26/10/2019 19:27

As a post script we don’t get trick or treaters and don’t trick or treat ourselves, walking around in the wet and dark so that my children can bother strangers for sweets is not my idea of fun.

Funlovingpastacat · 26/10/2019 19:29

The worst thing is the amount of plastic tat sold every year for it.

I thought this as i was in various shops today where whole aisles were given over to plastic halloween shit plastic masks and decorations.
Like another pp said, i dont really want to celebrate halloween but literally all half term activities are halloween themed and its more like a season rather than a day or 2.
