AIBU to think this can be repaired?

We've got Ikea wardrobes that have survived a house move and were fairly fragile as a result. In trying to move them from one room to another the back has come off one and it's totally collapsed to the side

I was hoping with the skills of a decent handyman if it had a new stronger back it could potentially be salvaged and save us buying two huge new wardrobes (and the hassle of getting rid of these). Anyone done similar or got any ideas? Or is it just a write off (which is what DH keeps muttering)? Help!

Surely that depends on whether it's cracked/split and what condition the sides are in?

Did the back come lose or break apart? Are the fixings/holes still sound?

Based on that photo it could be fixable, it could not.

quincejamplease · 26/10/2019 17:49

If the fixings have just come undone, then you put it back together again? Have you investigated at all?

CastleCrasher · 26/10/2019 17:49

It looks like a few strong brackets inside would salvage it

Hilda40 · 26/10/2019 17:59

Why does the back have handles? Nevertheless looks potentially repairable.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 26/10/2019 18:03

They're the doors Hilda!

Definitely repairable, just replace the back panel and any brackets that have become damaged.

FizzPopping · 26/10/2019 19:13

Thanks, probably worth getting someone to take a look then.

None of the fittings that go into either side are visibly damaged but have come away from the base panel so I can't tell if that can be fixed.

Corner Brackets/ braces from DIY store. Screw to inside back corners. Also they have a variety of boards for the backings and panel pins in various lengths.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/10/2019 19:28

When choosing screws, make sure they are not to long. Measure them against the thickness of the wardrobe. Also get the right sort of screws, it should say on the packet if you go to wicks.

Oldraver · 26/10/2019 19:32

It will be the back that holds it square, hence it now leaning to one side.

It needs a new back and maybe some angles in case the fixings have been broken

LIZS · 26/10/2019 19:33

Ours have done that . If you can tack the back on or put a baton across it shoukd be ok. You may need to rehang the doors. If it is going on the alcove, horizontal wedges such as books can hold the carcass in position.

ArsenicGreen · 26/10/2019 19:35

Yes, we did this for DD’s wardrobe. We bought extra panel pins to secure the back, new tape, and fixed it to the wall. It is like new!

MoobaaMoobaa · 26/10/2019 19:37

yes it's fixable.

have had to salvage wardrobes before. brackets as posted above, new panel pins, maybe new panel, wood clue everything.

Corner L shaped brackets on each corner and a brace piece across the back with a new board and it will be as good as new
