Poppies and Donations

AlanRickmanslovely · 25/10/2019 17:44

Happens every year- I always lose the poppies I buy, so I have crocheted one to wear in rememberance of all those that we owe so much to. I still donate, I donate a significant (to me) amount, but the number of people who think I made my poppy because I am too cheap and mean to buy one, are growing by the year.

AIBU at being pissed off and hurt by this?

YABU

AlanRickmanslovely · 25/10/2019 17:47

Why?

MonstranceClock · 25/10/2019 17:47

How are you less likely to lose this one if you’re wearing it the same as the other ones?

Grobagsforever · 25/10/2019 17:49

Tell them to do one. Poppies are simply enforcing jingoistic practices at the expense of personal remembrance and critical thought. Last thing we need right now with Boris whipping the country into a right wing nationalist frenzy.

AlanRickmanslovely · 25/10/2019 17:49

I have attached it to a proper brooch fitting and being made from yarn it is much more robust than paper

It crosses my mind tbh but I can't imagine saying it to anyone. How do you know it's "growing" by the year and why do you care.? Surely you don't wear the poppy to let people know you've donated?

AlanRickmanslovely · 25/10/2019 17:51

No I don't wear the poppy to let people know I have donated. I wear it because I want to and for what it represents , I just get fed up of being judged as mean

OP posts:
AlanRickmanslovely · 25/10/2019 17:52

Growing by the year means that every year more people seem to think it's their business to judge and pass comment

I wear the same type of poppy, OP. I bought a crocheted one about four years ago, and just dig it out each year. I donate to the Poppy Appeal, but I don’t like the paper and plastic poppies. They don’t stay on properly, and surely they could be seen to be quite wasteful these days? They are disposable, after all.

I saw purple crocheted poppies the other day as well, for animals who died in war, and I may get one of those as well.

Sargass0 · 25/10/2019 17:56

How do they know you made it? You can buy all sorts of crocheted or knitted ones?

BezalHell · 25/10/2019 17:57

Being forced into wearing a poppy goes against the very freedom that the Wars were fought for, surely.

Gruffalomom · 25/10/2019 17:58

Yabu.

The poppies sold are all produced at the poppy factory in Richmond which employs ex servicemen - severely injured ones I believe.

So even if you aren't depriving them of funds then you are potentially leading to depriving people of employment.

The more people make their own long lasting ones, the less will be purchased at collection points. You might still donate but not everyone will.

Perhaps consider wearing your crochet version alongside one bought from a collector?

AthollPlace · 25/10/2019 17:58

They sell proper poppy brooches. Mine is crafted from a WWI bullet shell recovered from France. I spent more on one poppy brooch than I’d spend in a lifetime on paper ones, but people still make snide comments about re-wearing it every year.

littleducks · 25/10/2019 17:59

How odd. I bought a knitted one last year as I thought it would be more eco friendly and will last. Didn't realise people thought like that, surely they realise making 'disposable' poppies costs money

mencken · 25/10/2019 18:02

Poppies are simply enforcing jingoistic practices at the expense of personal remembrance and critical thought.

The freedoms fought for include the right not to buy a poppy. And to make this kind of student-politician statement. Suggest watching 'The Young Ones' and see if you recognise yourself - clue, they aren't laughing WITH you...

Ponoka7 · 25/10/2019 18:04

Why not buy a broach or an umbrella etc from the Official Site?

There are other ones available besides the paper ones.

BlueChangeling · 25/10/2019 18:06

I always managed to lose my plastic poppy so I bought a rather nice poppy broach from the RBL a few years ago which I wear now. I still pop a few pound into the first poppy appeal box I come across each year.

WorraLiberty · 25/10/2019 18:07

but the number of people who think I made my poppy because I am too cheap and mean to buy one, are growing by the year.

That's ridiculous, who are these people?

I wear the same poppy brooch I bought 3 years ago (still donate every year) and not a single person has ever even mentioned it Confused

BlondieJ · 25/10/2019 18:11

FYI, You can buy poppy pin badges and brooches. You can also choose who and what you donate your own money too. Each to their own xx

StoneofDestiny · 25/10/2019 18:15

save us all from poppy fascism! Wear one or don't wear one - personal choice, nobody else's business.

KenzoBaby · 25/10/2019 18:23

The Royal Family wear a selection of enamel/knitted/paper brooches. No-one accuses them of not properly supporting the campaign!

I have 2 enamel brooches and donate regularly by direct debit with a gift aid declaration so they get an extra 20% from the government. I'm pretty confident that's worth more to them than a few coins in a container once a year.

june2007 · 25/10/2019 18:24

You can buy crochet poppies for people to where. Others should mind there own bees wax. If ne chooses not where a poppy othen that's there choice too..

Southwest12 · 25/10/2019 18:29

I have a crochet poppy and I got it from an official poppy seller at Waterloo station a few years ago on London Poppy Day. I still donate every year, I just prefer the crochet poppy to forever having to replace a paper one.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/10/2019 18:31

Christ on a bike! The Poppy Appeal was on launched yesterday. This must be a MN record for a poppy thread.

DH (RAF) was offered a crocheted poppy by a cleaner at work last year. He didn't get one because I'd already got them from the Poppy Shop and if we wanted crocheted ones Id make them.
