To be worried about lack of Flu vaccine?

OhHolyNightWaking · 25/10/2019 09:41

Our GP practice holds open flu clinics. These have all now passed, without any children receiving the nasal flu vaccine because the surgery has been unable to order it.

I understand there is a shortage, but I am worried about my DS potentially not receiving the vaccine this year. Is anyone else in the same boat? Wondering if the shortage is being felt everywhere, or if my GP surgery has cocked up by ordering too late or something?

It isn't possible to pay for the nasal vaccine for children privately (as far as I can see) otherwise I would look into this. However that probably isn't an option anyway as presumably the shortage will be impacting both public and private sectors.

AIBU to be concerned about this?

My GP surgery have cancelled all flu clinic for under 65's until they get more in.

Aragog · 25/10/2019 12:59

I didn't get called this year and there was a delay on the under 65s one at the local chemist. I had it done this week in the end and we payed for teen DD's.

I did react to this year's - very sore swollen arm and feeling unwell. Anti inflammatories and anti histamines has helped.

But I'd rather have a day or two of that than risk getting flu. Not sure my body would cope very well with full blown flu this year.

My local GP also struggled to get the U65 vaccine in, I have MS and work in a school so was very nervous, they eventually got some stocks in and I got it about a month later than normal. There were no children in that dedicated flu vaccine clinic so guess they havent had the child vaccine at all.

I work in an infant school and the children were given their nasal sprays last Friday.

I am so cross with the vaccination team that came to my dd’s school this week.
They told my 8 year old she couldn’t have it as I hadn’t completed the whole form..I did complete it and when I asked at the school they said there was a tick to say she’d had it and that they would’ve called me in to do the form if that was the case !
Bloody ridiculous!

No problems with supply at my DC school, they had theirs this week. I am in an at risk group so had my jab last week, free at Boots as GP supply has been delayed, I have been ill and off work since, don't think I'll bother with it next year.

PookieDo · 25/10/2019 13:11

Different organisations are not acting cohesively

So if school nursing get delivered some, they will vax their cohort

Whilst the GP’s cannot vax their cohort because they don’t have enough

Can I assure anyone that all surgeries I know of are calling daily to try get some and they can come in dribs and drabs. It’s so frustrating and I totally understand why people are stressed

Brackish · 25/10/2019 13:14

I think DS was supposed to have his done at school today. I wonder if it will happen...

Banana770 · 25/10/2019 13:16

YANBU, I’m a risk group who should get it and I’ve got to wait until November. DD is eligible for the nasal one but is on a waiting list, they can’t even give me an appointment.

OhHolyNightWaking · 25/10/2019 13:22

Well, I just called to book a smear test and my flu jab, and was promptly booked in for both. Then I enquired about the nasal vaccine and she said she could book me (DS) in for that too, so I have an appointment for him now.

Their website still says they can't get the nasal spray, so will be interesting to see if the appointment is actually honoured.

I hope everyone who wants a vaccine (child or adult), and is currently struggling to sort it out, can get one ASAP!

watch vaxxed on youtube to find out why Thanks but no thanks, I'm not interested in anti-vax propaganda.

DD had hers in school 2 weeks ago. I popped into Tesco with DH to get ours only to be told they have run out of jabs for under 65s. It was a worry as DH is asthmatic, we went to Asda and was able to get it with no problems. I only had to pay £7 and DH was able to get it free there rather than trying to get to his Drs which isn't always easy.

penisbeakers · 25/10/2019 15:38

The pharmacies have run out too.

ChestyCoffin · 25/10/2019 16:00

@MoltoAgitato wonder if it’s different parts of the country. All our flu clinics for clinical staff have ran as normal.
DM (over 65) had hers yesterday.
