Quick boiler AIBU

Booked annual boiler service, heating engineer came. I mentioned to him that we hadn't had the heating on yet but that the hot water was making a funny noise.

20 minutes later, he left, giving me invoice and said he couldn't hear any hot water noise. Fine.

I was about to pay the invoice, but before I did, thought I'd just check that the heating was working. Turn on heating and nothing happens at all (ie no noise, no heat).

My AIBU is, would you think a boiler service included checking that boiler kicks in when heating and/or hot water is turned on.

Thanks all. We spoke to heating engineer today and he said that he doesn't test the heating as part of the service. Seems odd! Not sure whether to pay or not. Have got another guy coming next week to look at the heating issue (and possibly actually service our boiler as not sure this guy did!).

If you go on the Gas Safe website it should list what a boiler service includes/is checked. You can also check the engineers credentials/registration etc are up to date.

Eh? The boiler is designed to heat your home so why would he not test it was working? What did he actually do?

redredrobins · 24/10/2019 22:27

I wouldn't pay him, he clearly did not do a proper service!

This is from www.gassaferegister.co.uk

A gas safety check assesses the basic safety of gas appliances in your home to ensure they are all working correctly and safely. A Gas Safe registered engineer will assess the following four areas:Gas appliances are on the right setting and burning correctly with the correct operating pressureHarmful gases are being removed from the appliance safely to the air outsideThat any ventilation routes are clear and adequateAll the safety devices are working properly

A service will consist of a full check of a gas appliance and - in addition to the above checks - the registered engineer will dismantle the appliance to inspect and clean it. The engineer will assess the physical condition of the appliance, installation pipework, air vents and any flues for deterioration. They will carry out performance tests to ensure the appliance is operating safely and efficiently and take any necessary remedial action, alerting you to any issues.

How much is he charging for this non service?

instanaan · 24/10/2019 22:35

£70. I thought he was on to a winner when he left after 20 mins! He comes highly recommended too.

Had mine done last week and he went around the house checking all the radiators. It should be part of a regular boiler service.

We have a piece of paper with various things ticked off. All look more like gas safe type things e.g flue not blocked. None say, 'check radiators' or anything like that.

The other thing it might be is an issue with the thermostat itself. I don't know if that would be checked in a boiler service.

I just think it's ridiculous that a boiler service wouldn't check central heating/hot water at least come on as expected.
