To just want a basic printer and not have to sign up for instant inks etc?

Looking online for a very basic printer, mainly to be used for printing off eBay labels, return labels, similar. The cheapest around are HP it seems, but they all come with this Instant Ink subscription. I'd rather just buy my ink when I need it, not be tied into some subscription. I'm not planning on using much ink at all and I need to save money wherever possible.

Other printers seem to come with cartridges with all colours in one, so if you run out of one colour you have to replace all of them.

I'm not techy minded, so need a simple set up too. I've no CD drive, so it has to work without a CD.

Am I asking too much?! Angry

You don’t have to sign up to instant ink, you can just use normal cartridges. And HP don’t need a cd.

EskewedBeef · 24/10/2019 08:28

I'm signed up to the hp ink thing, but have never paid anything for it in the couple of years I've had it because I print very infrequently. I think fewer than 10 sheets a month is free.

JumpiestBat · 24/10/2019 08:30

Just don't subscribe to instant ink, it's not compulsory! I've got an HP, set it up, ignored instant ink stuff and just get my cartridges when I need them from Argos!

Adollop · 24/10/2019 08:34

Ah ok, I got the impression it was compulsory .. that's fine then.

Anyone used non HP cheaper cartridges successfully? Like Stinky Ink - if they're even still around?

Google "razor and blades model"... the whole point of printer sales is to get us all to buy ink! Wink

Purplejay · 24/10/2019 08:37

I have just bought a cannon printer from Argos for about £30. No subscription. When I buy ink, I will buy compatible ink from Amazon and pick those with good reviews. I have done this with my previous printer with no issues.,

Adollop · 24/10/2019 08:45

Fweak exactly what I suspected! Angry

Purple is the Cannon easy to install, without a CD?

Are you looking at that small turquoise hp one? Dont get it if so!

icecreamcrackers · 24/10/2019 08:49

With instant ink you can have a free subscription of 15 pages a month. I have a subscription and it's very good for us. I can print pages via Wi-Fi on my phone and it was very easy to set up.

As other people have said you don't have to have a subscription at all and use normal cartridges.

peoplepleaser1 · 24/10/2019 08:54

Thought I had made a good choice with our HP printer but the ink runs out ridiculously quickly and it's horrendously expensive. Think I've been had Angry.

JoshJoshJosh · 24/10/2019 08:54

Just buy a black and white laser printer. I bought a Brother one for about £90 11 years ago. Still going strong only needs one toner cartridge and lasts for ages.

Adollop · 24/10/2019 08:55

I was looking at the hp 2630 all in one. £29 on Amazon, it's the cheapest I can find.

Getting stressed just thinking about setting it up Blush How does the instant ink work? Do they send you some in the post when you run out and charge you for it? What are the benefits versus just buying ink when you need it and how does the cost compare?

OP posts:
Adollop · 24/10/2019 08:56

Josh, £90 is out of my budget at the moment.

icecreamcrackers · 24/10/2019 09:04

They said you cartridges before you run out and like I've said if you print less than 15 pages a month it's free and they have subscription up to 300pages for 7.99 a month it's all done automatically via Wi-Fi. The print would need to be connected to the Wi-Fi at all times and it logs how many pages you have done via your up account.

Some of the printer come with a free trail period.

NetballHoop · 24/10/2019 09:05

Not having a CD drive won't matter as you'll be able to download any software from their website.

CormacMcLaggen · 24/10/2019 09:08

Have you got Freecycle in your area? Might be worth asking on the group if anyone has a printer they no longer need or want, I just gave a perfectly working one away.

PettyContractor · 24/10/2019 09:10

Google tells me a small laser (Laserjet Pro M15 ) can be had for £62, though not sure if that include postage.

I suspect it would be a few years before you needed to replace the toner cartridge, and in that time you'd have spent a lot more than an extra £32 on inks for an inkjet.

PettyContractor · 24/10/2019 09:11

Actually, if you're that hard-up, I agree with getting a used printer. You should be able to find one for little or nothing.

Thesearmsofmine · 24/10/2019 09:16

Instant ink is really easy. They just send you more ink in the post when yours is running low. You don’t get charged for the ink, the charges are for the number of pages you print(but like others have set you get a certain amount for free.

Pinkkahori · 24/10/2019 09:16

I have a cheap canon printer that gets little use. I get my ink refilled at one of those cheaper places. Set up was easy.

Adollop · 24/10/2019 09:17

icecream but what is the £7.99 subscription for? Is that the cost of ink or am i just paying to be sent ink that they charge extra for?

I've looked for a used one, but nothing nearby yet.
I'll look at small laser printers on line, I expected them to be much more than that.

yumscrumfatbum · 24/10/2019 09:22

If you don't go down the instant ink line then research the cost of replacement ink for your chosen printer. I have a canon printer it met my needs and the replacement ink is affordable

Thesearmsofmine · 24/10/2019 09:25

They have different plans depends on how much you print per month. You sign up to the one that is suitable for you.

So 15 pages or less is free.
Up to 50 pages a month is £1.99
Upto 100 pages a month is £3.49 and so on.

SarahNade · 24/10/2019 09:29

I can't give advice on cartridges, but a lot (if not most?) of printers have websites where you can download the driver, so if you can't use CDs (like me with my CD-less laptop), you can download the driver onto your laptop/tablet/computer/etc and then open program and double click/install. Just some info that may help.

Adollop · 24/10/2019 09:32

Sorry, I'm being incredibly thick here ... did 15 pages a month is free? But I have to buy ink when I need it? £1.99 for up to 50 pages, then the cost of ink on top of that or is that for the ink I use?
