Chickenpox

This isn’t a thread about one thread, it’s a thread about many threads and many conversations I’ve had in real life.

So many times I’ve heard the argument “but it’s contagious for two days before the spots appear so what’s the difference” or something along those lines.

The difference is like driving a car.

The two days with no symptoms and no way of knowing that you’re spreading chickenpox is like driving along a normal road at the speed limit doing the best you can to watch for any obstacles. It is the best you can do and most of the time results in a safe journey with no casualties but every now and again unavoidable tragic accidents occur through no fault of the driver and whilst horrific for all involved there is nobody to blame.

Knowingly going out with chicken pox before they have scabbed over is like driving along the road without slowing down into a crowd of people and hoping for the best. Some will manage to jump out of the way, if you’re really lucky they all will but it’s not a risk that’s worth taking and will likely result in serious harm or possibly death to some of the people in your path.

We have moved on to comparing having chickenpox to driving a car into a crowd of people nowadays have we?

Secretsquirrelisfedup · 24/10/2019 01:14

@vampyress no I am not comparing having chickenpox to driving a car into a crowd of people. I’ve had it, it wasn’t fun and I stayed in my house away from people as did my children.

Knowingly exposing crowds of people to the contagious stage of chicken pox where only the fit and able people stand a chance of being safe and even then maybe being unlucky enough to suffer serious complications, yes I am.

Not sure who we is or what we are moving in from though.

It's the same though with many illnesses unfortunately. Like people who willingly and knowingly send their poor children to school or daycare when they're ill. You feel sorry for the child, who likely wants nothing more than to be home and comfortable. And for those poor people who have compromised immune systems who risk catching said illness.

Had a colleague once who turned up to work with gastro....

Some people are so annoying...

@hellofromtheotherside2020 I agree and it’s crap. In an ideal world employers wouldn’t be arseholes and would have strict rules about even people with colds turning up for work and wouldn’t penalise people for taking that time off either.

It might be one difficult year but if everyone followed suit it would most likely be more productivity all round going forward as there would be a lot less contagious illnesses spreading if people weren’t spreading them so much.

As it is there are rules about the most notorious unpredictably unsafe common illnesses. 48 hours from the last episode in d&v which is probably not enough in some cases and till the spots have scabbed over in chickenpox and these really should not be compromised.
