Closing the blind?!

So anyone who works in an office knows that having a window seat is a privilege.

One colleague Who has a window seat (no matter what the weather is) will come in and pull the blind all the way down saying there’s a glare on her screen.

Putting the rest of us on the row into darkness.

Aibu to think it’s just selfish behaviour?

I can’t work with the light on the screen either. My new job I had a headache for weeks as I have a window in front and to the side. During the day it gives me a headache

Can you not swap desks?

Aderyn19 · 23/10/2019 14:17

She is trying to work and can't do that with glare on the screen.

Ginfordinner · 23/10/2019 14:19

If her screen faces the window, then unfortunately it is actually an issue. In my last office we had the blind down until the sun moved round, then it went up again.

AryaStarkWolf · 23/10/2019 14:22

I always have my blind down too (it's not a shared space though)

Lunafortheloveogod · 23/10/2019 14:22

Offer to swap desks or get her an anti glare screen cover thingy if it really bothers you. I’m in the middle ground I can’t work with the light glare on the screen but if it’s poorly lit or fluorescent lights I’ll get a headache from the screen itself.

So why does she sit next to the window? She might as well sit somewhere else.

Tooearlyforadrink · 23/10/2019 14:24

I mean even when it’s literally full clouds and rain, not a hint of sun in sight.

I get debilitating migraines if forced to squint at a screen cos of glare, I do leave the blind until I absolutely have to though cos I know people like to remember there is daylight when stuck in the office

AmIThough · 23/10/2019 14:36

Glare can be a problem even if there's no sun.
Ask HR for an anti glare screen for her.

Cauliflowerpower · 23/10/2019 14:37

Are there no lights?

Tooearlyforadrink · 23/10/2019 14:52

Are there no lights?

Well obviously there is, but not all of us want to sit in artificial lighting all day long.

OP posts:
PookieDo · 23/10/2019 15:05

It doesn’t matter that it’s not sun, it’s is the daylight all day that causes headaches

PookieDo · 23/10/2019 15:06

I have Venetian blinds at work and I have to work with the slats pointing upwards, kind of half open half closed to not get a headache

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 23/10/2019 15:07

but not all of us want to sit in artificial lighting all day long

Unfortunately, I have to for exactly the same reasons. Windows on one side mean screen glare on one side, and the same on the other. I'm in the middle and can't actually see the outside or any daylight at all. It's horrible.

PookieDo · 23/10/2019 15:36

Employers should be helping by putting anti glare film on or anti glare on screens
Have a go at your employers

cherryblossomgin · 23/10/2019 15:38

Could be the reflecting from the window making it hard for her to see the screen.

antisupermum · 23/10/2019 15:39

Can she not buy one of the glare filters that attach to your screen? It's a little "IBM 1990s" but it does do the trick. They cost very little from Amazon etc.

The company should be providing these if requested, as they have a responsibility for employee workstations/ergonomics etc.

SellmeyourMLMcrap · 23/10/2019 15:44

This would likely annoy me a touch to be honest but I actually feel like it is the rest of the office being selfish rather than the person closing the blind.

She needs it down to work and so far as you've stated to date, I don't think that a solution that works for everyone has been offered. Clearly if you are all just moaning on to each other about her closing the blind then if she hears she may well feel bullied and I'm sure you know how word travels around offices.

So yes YABU and a little selfish, hopefully it hasn't gone further than just complaining here as if it's turned to gossip then you are more than unreasonable.
