To want to buy non princessy dolls for DD?

Posting for traffic!

When I was little I had a set of twelve little dolls, 3 or 4 inches high. They were plastic, had moveable arms and legs and just looked like ‘normal’ children, they had a range of hair colours and styles, and various colourful clothes. I played with these dolls for years and years and adored them. Got rid of them in my twenties when my parents gave me all my old toys and I couldn’t even imagine having my own kids at that point.

15 years later and I thought I’d love to get something similar for my own DD (and for DS to play with too when he’s old enough). I even thought maybe they do similar sets with little boy dolls in too now!

But all I can find that is any way similar, is little princesses, with pink and purple hair and wings and mermaid tails etc. Am not trying to start a big gender debate, DD loves princessy things, along with a million other things, but I’d just love to buy something a bit more ‘normal’ looking on this occasion. Does anyone have any idea if something like this exists? In an ideal world with boy dolls too?! Thanks!

Not tiny dolls but Lottie dolls are great.

SoyDora · 21/10/2019 11:41

Lottie dolls or one of those small world sets they use in EYFS.

Little plastic people with a variety of ethnicities/ages/some had disabilities, from educational supply shops. We used to have one at work that looked just like my FIL!
You could get a variety of DC dolls.

Great, thanks for this!

CuteOrangeElephant · 21/10/2019 13:23

I was going to suggest Lottie Dolls too

Iwantedtrianglesnotsquares · 21/10/2019 13:24

Most definitely Lottie dolls. Child like and perfect to hold and play with. Childlike body proportions too.

I do love the Lottie dolls and might go for those when she’s a bit older. The ones I used to have were more like this kind of thing (but just more normal little girl looking):

Lottie dolls are a bit bigger than I was thinking, and I’d prefer a few smaller ones that she could play with together. Maybe I need to stop reliving my own childhood through DD though!! I LOVE the range of the Lottie dolls though, definitely going to get a girl and boy of those at some point

There are loads of Barbies that aren't princess-y - astronauts, pilots, that type of thing. But if you search for 'Chelsea doll' on Amazon this brings up loads of 'younger' looking dolls (think she is meant to be Barbie's little sister or something) and again these are not all princess-y type ones.

Macandcheeseplease · 21/10/2019 14:10

Also the Chelsea dolls are smaller and there are boy ones too.

theneverendinglaundry · 21/10/2019 14:12

Haha I was also going to suggest Lottie dolls, my girls love them!

PumpkinP · 21/10/2019 14:20

I agree that there are lots of dolls that aren’t princesses. Don’t think you’re looking hard enough, try smyths.

RoseGoldEagle · 21/10/2019 18:43

I agree there are lots of non-princessy dolls that are bigger PumpkinP, I’m just looking for something a bit smaller. I’ve realised we have a Chelsea doll that DD was given for her birthday, it’s 6inches and I think I’m thinking more like 4 inches, which would fit in her dollshouse. They do make 4 inch ones I just can only find fairies/princesses. But I do like the Lottie and Chelsea ones, thanks for all the advice!
