AIBU to think this isn't accurate?

To summarise, I purchased a fairly expensive item (few grand) on the spot today. Daft, as I should have slept on it. Not from a shop, but from a dealer of these goods. 30 mins later after I had walked out, I decided it wasn't actually what we had come in for (I was convinced it was what I wanted as he was a good sales person and I am clearly an easily swayed customer). I called with a profuse apology to ask for a refund. I haven't taken the goods yet. Nothing has happened. It's a Sunday evening so the transaction hasn't even gone through to the bank yet. I was told that no refund was available. I hadn't known that and certainly wasn't told that when I had over my credit card. This is a very well known dealership so had assumed there would be a cooling off period or change of mind. I know that under law, there's no right to a refund for change of mind but I know that many businesses do as as business practice. No work has been done on their side. Nothing has been packaged, no work done, no loss on their side other than an hour of their time in selling me the item. I literally walked out the door and called 30 mins later. I'm told that I can have a refund but will need to pay a £50 transaction fee as that is what the credit card would charge as a flat fee to a business. This seems excessive to me. I don't work in retail though. AIBU to think maybe this isn't accurate? The vendor cancelled the transaction within 30 mins but nothing is going through until tomorrow as it isn't a working day today. Would the vendor really be charged £50 for this by the credit card company?

It depends on the value of the payment. I have a small business, we take card payments and the card company take a % of the transaction so if the transaction was in the thousands then it’s feasible that the charge could be £50. Bigger businesses probably get a better deal on card payments than we do though x

I don't think cooling off periods apply when you buy in person. Is it a car?

User181019 · 20/10/2019 20:12

It isn't a car and I don't want to say what it is in case it outs me. Yes, I'm really stupid to have been persuaded into getting something which wasn't what I was looking for. It's a large dealership so I'm genuinely surprised that they would refuse a refund. I wish I had been told very clearly that no refund was possible once I handed my card over. I suppose a lesson learnt there for me. Never assume anything :(

The details are here, OP: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/changed-your-mind/changing-your-mind-about-something-youve-bought/

I'm afraid that what to do now really is up to the retailer, so it may be that the £50 "credit card fee" will be worth it to you, to avoid paying thousands instead

Wilmalovescake · 20/10/2019 20:17

I’d be delighted by only having to pay £50 tbh.

I think the card processing charges on a payment and refund in the thousands could well be £50.

Interestedwoman · 20/10/2019 20:18

I'm glad you only have to pay £50 to sort it out. x

Thanks for taking the time to respond. This is useful to know.

I didn't realise that it isn't possible to cancel a transaction. The transaction hasn't gone through and the bank have confirmed that a retailer can cancel a transaction rather than wait for it go through then issue a refund. I suppose I'm not sure why the retailer wouldn't cancel and perhaps avoid a transaction fee. Perhaps I misunderstand what the bank told me as it sounds, from above, that there is a fee for the vendor regardless.

Is a motor home/caravan
Look at the dealerships website for info

User181019 · 20/10/2019 22:22

Thanks 32summersherewishiwasnt. Website says
all purchases come with a 30 day period to try out with the option to return for refund if we change mind, which is actually what the seller had said before I handed card over (which is why I assumed refunds were possible). So I'll go back and query the no refund statement in the light of this policy.

Thanks.
