I used to love this program and felt that this was the template for sitcoms if it's time and everything else was a variation on a theme - anyone remember the sitcom with Judi Dench playing opposite her real life husband - i think she sang the theme tune (before this became a joke in Littelt Britain) . Am I BU in being nostalgic for the days of this kind of TV - do you think these kind of progs would seem a bit dated now?

In 2009 I can remember the best thing by a mile over Xmas was 'Not the Nine o Clock News'

Last of the Summer Wine is an absolute classic, and my go-to when I’m feeling nostalgic or homesick (Yorkshire girl)

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 16:23

Frown you'd also like In Loving Memory then

This morning, DS2 and I were watching Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.
We also have the books and love to read them.
Brilliant writing.

Helenluvsrob · 20/10/2019 16:46

Currently enjoying still open all hours. Is as good as the original and Scarborough is shaping up to be funny.

Many of the old comedies are frighteningly dated sadly

VeryLittleOwl · 20/10/2019 16:47

Hannah Gordon - oh my God, Joint Account! I'd completely forgotten about that one until just then!

Another fan of Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister, I was sharing a clip of the explanation of salami tactics on Facebook this morning to illustrate a point I was making, a lot of it is still so relevant.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 20/10/2019 16:52

I remember many of these, loved them. I still watch 'On The Buses' whenever it's on, it's great seeing London as it was then.

I believe only Olive (Anna Karen) is still alive now?

Pandaintheporridge · 20/10/2019 16:56

Never the Twain - with Donald Sindon and Windsor Davies

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 16:57

Thanks a lot, now I have the Terry and June theme tune in my head. Honestly, I thought it was crap at the time, and I don't think it's aged well. The Good Life is another matter.

dayswithaY · 20/10/2019 17:01

What was the sitcom with the brilliant Lynda Bellingham and James Bolam? It had Faith in the title, as that was her name and Julia Sawahla played her daughter? They show Shelley on Forces TV every night, not funny at all, and barely anything happens.

I caught the repeats of Widows, by Lynda Is Plante from about 1982. My God it made me feel very uncomfortable. Slut shaming, vile sexist language, totally unnecessary slapping of women's faces, rape passed off as comedy. We've come a long way. I cringe when I remember watching it with my Mum as a young teenager.

I loved Allo, Allo. I’m in a chat group with a lot of people from all over Europe recently I signed in to find everyone discussing how funny Allo, Allo was and quoting lines from it.

This thread is making me feel nostalgic. I used to love Terry and June. There used to be so many good sitcoms.

My parents used to have a Teasmade. I think it's about time they made a comeback. How nice to be woken with a pot of freshly brewed tea.

Goawayquickly · 20/10/2019 17:14

I don’t think ‘That’s love’ has been mentioned, with Jimmy Mulville and and Diane Hardcastle.

It was a proper sitcom but slightly more modern and sophisticated, the couple both had very good careers and young children. I used to enjoy that one.

Badbilly · 20/10/2019 17:22

I used to find many episodes of “Steptoe & Son” very upsetting as a child, as I was looking through a child eyes and not that of an adult, and hadn’t yet discovered or understood the concepts of tragedy and pathos. Unfortunately this sort of ruined it for me as an adult, because I would always have an overwhelming feeling of sadness when watching it, unable to get rid of my subconscious feelings still left over from my childhood.

My favourites already mentioned on here are “Dear John” , “Ever decreasing circles” and “ Just Good Friends”. At the time of the last mentioned one I was in an “on-off” relationship with a lovely lady, and she would send me letters and cards addressed to “Vince” and sign them “Penny” (obviously pre-internet days). Our relationship finally fizzled our in the late 1990’s but very occasionally (maybe once a year) I get a Facebook message from “Penny” updating me on what’s going off in her life, and what Bands she has seen ( we have a shared love of Blues Guitarists).
