Not exactly bugging (audio recording) must be some simple way to do?

AIBU to think there must be some relatively simple way to record hours and hours worth of domestic audio in the hope of capturing what I'm hoping for? Or is it a completely ridiculous idea without expensive equipment?

It's not exactly bugging but if anyone knows of simple audio bugging type equipment ie what did they use on "The secret life of 4 year olds?" Or another easy set up. I just have no idea where to ask on MN or what to Google. Apologies if IABU to post in AIBU.

If you're interested I'll tell you what exactly it's for but its essentially similar, not anything nefarious or underhand.

I'm intrigued as I'm really struggling to think of anything that isn't nefarious or underhanded!

Look for a noise activated audio recorder, they will only record when detect noise, thus you can record "hours and hours" without needing tons of storage.

What's it for?!

Thank you JoyceDivision, Jupiters and jimmyhill!

My child has additional needs and struggles with writing for physical reasons and reading for psychological reasons. He cannot produce any written work at the moment and is very reluctant to draw.

He's got a huge vocabulary and uses language in a very rich way - I didn't notice how much until this was pointed out by an assessing psychologist.

"Look! A black and white horse in a little grassy field!" Not the greatest example but I hope you see what I mean.

I'd love to capture some of the things he says - never at a moment I can write it down - to type up as starting points for stories. I can help him make illustrations with photos or finger drawing on a screen.

I want to help him write his own stories in his own words and print out something he can take pride in to show for it. He often says "I'm stupid" and feels quite down about not being red able to do what others in his class can.

What a lovely thing to do. How old is he?

Neome · 20/10/2019 15:46

He'll be 6 in a few weeks. If I succeed I'll be a proud mum and come back with a picture Smile

Not sure how much you want to spend but there's a 'photo album'. You insert a photo or a drawing and record what the child says. Had good results with a sen child although he was younger.

mankyfourthtoe · 20/10/2019 15:56

Technology is great now, printing out a drawing with his words typed underneath, print some pages and you've got a book.
Something to be proud of for show and tell.

Sorry, rambling!

Neome · 20/10/2019 16:01

Great idea mankyfourthtoe exactly what I'm aiming at. Flowers

Oh and if he's not enjoying writing have you tried a good whiteboard and pens?
We had a massive one in her bedroom. Loads of coloured whiteboard pens and a good rubber.
Lots of modelling of "oh I don't like my cat, I'll rub it out and redo the tail" "oh I'm really pleased with my cat now" write cat under and take a photo to share with dad.
I didn't push for writing initially but it came on.

Neome · 20/10/2019 16:21

Whiteboard, yes, could do more with this. You've got me thinking.

We had a business size one on the wall, so we could sit side by side.
When she was on her own she'd have an iPad so she could take photos.
