10 year old playing football yesterday hurt his toe. My mum instinct is saying get it x rayed but I'm not sure if there's any point?

So aibu to get it x rayed at minor injuries?? Or just buddy tape the toe myself??

Is this pinky toe broken??

Bless him.
To be honest you won't know it's broken without an x-ray but they do usually only tape them up anyway unless it need surgery.

Looks like my foot when I broke my little toe. I insisted on an X ray as I needed time off work but yes, there is little they can do. Unless you want to sit in A&E on a Sunday.

Rinoachicken · 20/10/2019 10:21

Yes get it x-rayed. If it’s the actual tow then no there’s not much treatment wise but he’ll need to rest it, no PE etc. But I broke my ‘toe’ when I was a teenager and the actual break was further up the toe bone, more like the foot, and I had a cast. My toe looked like your DS. Also, with the bruising around the toe joint there could be damage to the joint, so it definitely needs an X-ray IMO

It needs x raying, to leave it is neglectful as it needs proper diagnosis.
Try a minor injuries unit. Most have x ray facilities and are much quieter.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/10/2019 10:32

They often don’t bother x raying little toes as it doesn’t change the treatment. I’ve buddy taped mine before. However, as it is a child I would get it checked at a minor injuries clinic.

Pinkyyy · 20/10/2019 10:33

Bless him that looks awful, I'd definitely get it x-rayed.

On a side note- his second toe looks like it's curling under, that needs to be resolved or it could cause problems as he gets older.

doublebarrellednurse · 20/10/2019 10:33

There is incredibly little you can do about it but that bruising could indicate a break. The guidelines are limited now for toes, they often don't even strap them anymore. The difficulty could be with it being a child it could effect the healing and growth, or a break elsewhere in the foot or dislocation.

It'll be a long wait but worth it

The NHS suggest home treatment for straightforward broken toes in adults but minor injuries for a child

We're going to minor injuries later, just sorting out childcare for other children first.

Thanks everyone.

His 2 brothers have broken 4 bones between them this year so I'm no stranger to minor injuries or a&e waiting times.

Given that every X-ray increases your cancer risk, albeit minutely, I wouldn't bother getting it X-rayed when it won't affect the treatment.

Just strap it up and it will heal by itself.

toejambed · 20/10/2019 15:18

Minor injuries refused to X-ray as the treatment is no different.

It's buddy taped (he screamed while they did this)

Also the X-ray department was closed so we would've been referred back to a&e if the practitioner wanted it x rayed. If I knew that I would've just gone to a&e

They will have checked for alignment so if it felt out of place or wonky they would have probably referred you to A&E for an X Ray.

CAG12 · 20/10/2019 15:38

Im a nurse in A+E and we dont xray toes unless theres very obvious deformite (dislocation)

The treatment is the same as a bad soft tissue injury - rest and pain killers
