Everyone's a narcissist

It seems to me that quite a few people I've spoken to recently have declared their mother a narcissist. Perhaps they are. Not disputing it. But it seems a bit of a thing at the moment to identify one or other parent as a narcissist, especially mum's.

Anyone else noticed?

(I fully understand it's horrible living with a parent who is narcissistic etc.. not trying to undermine people's experiences. But I'd never heard anyone describe parents this way 10 or 20 years ago. Now everyone seems to have a narcissistic parent/aunt/uncle/grandparent or teacher in their life)

Yanbu I also see people on here described as “a bit narc” most people are probably not narcissistic they could just be horrible bastards!

x2boys · 20/10/2019 10:09

It's a thing definitely on mumsnet and it's usually someone the Op.doesn't like ,Mil, ex etc .

Most people are pretty self obsessed I find. But a true narcissist is a very different thing. They don't always reveal themselves straight away either.

PennyNotSoWise · 20/10/2019 10:12

I'd describe my own mother as an abusive, self centred prick but maybe not a narc. I think the word is overused, but actual narcissists are quite rare, I think?

I agree with you too that it's only a word that I've seen being used in recent times, mainly on here actually. In fact I haven't heard anyone use it outside of MN, but have absolutely no doubt that some posters do know some narcs, just maybe not as many that say they do. putting my hard hat on

Same goes for sociopaths. Of course they exist, just not in every family and friendship group. Some people are just dicks without a label.

doublebarrellednurse · 20/10/2019 10:22

Armchair psychiatry is rife on the internet. People don't know the difference between clinical narcissism and the pop culture narcissist. I mean why would they? So it gets thrown around ALOT

Velveteenfruitbowl · 20/10/2019 10:24

I think many people struggle to distinguish between narcissism and narcissistic traits.

fotheringhay · 20/10/2019 10:27

Please be sensitive to those of us whose mothers are the most colosal headfucks.

If the terminology we use isn't strictly medically accurate, a bit of leeway would still be nice.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/10/2019 10:31

We all have narcissistic traits that will becomes apparent at times

Some people are very narcissistic but that’s not the same as being diagnosed which is rare

Like we can all have low level depression or feel depressed, struggle with anxiety, as some might describe being a bit OCD - these we can all and most of us do experience at times (and the difficulties with dealing with someone who is narcissistic)

the diagnostic measure are on a spectrum and that spectrum most of will be on at some point

Narc is very much the mh word of the moment as was sociopath a few years ago

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 20/10/2019 11:04

Boris Johnson is a narcissist in my opinion.

mintich · 20/10/2019 11:12

My mum is actually diagnosed as a narcissist (in true fashion she didnt believe it and stopped treatment!) So it does bother me sometimes that people think their family members are be ause of one incident.
I do agree that people can have traits of it though. My brother definitely does bit perhaps its learned behaviour

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/10/2019 12:59

I think most world leaders have a lot of narcissistic and anti social traits

You have to be able to make some very cold and calculated decisions that impact a large number of people and can cost lives

Even the nicest of leaders
