To ask for the most wtf films your parents let you watch

So inspired by the fact that “Wish you were here” is now on amazon. Watched it the other day and clearly remember it being on tv and everyone in my class shouting “up yer bum” for a week. I reckon we were around 8 years old!

Watched it today and am shocked that not only did my parents let me watch it, but seemingly so did lots of others.

I also remember going to sleepovers and watching things like nightmare on elm street etc at a pretty young age.

What can’t you believe your parents let you watch?

Oh god the ring scared the crap out of me and I was about 18 by the time it came out I think.! Also I watched the Blair witch project at about 18, in broad daylight with a room full of friends and still think it’s the most disturbing film I’ve seen. I know loads of people don’t feel the same - but I remember my mil saying she felt exactly the same - scariest film ever

A really lovely neighbour of mine let her six-year-old watch "Silence of the Lambs"!

And I have forever hated Tom Cruise because the tv listings had a film of his listed as a family comedy and I started watching it with my twelve-year-old. It was about a teenager who turns his parents' house into a brothel while they are away.

I don't think my parents knew that age certification with find was a thing.

Mostly fine but I was badly affected by One Few Over the Cuckoo's Nest at 12.

kittiesattack · 19/10/2019 23:58

Look who's talking when I was around 10. Also Bonnie and Clyde. Dirty Dancing and Grease when 7 or 8 ish.

Thetruth02 · 20/10/2019 00:00

Reading these am thinking the singing detective is long overdue a remake

@kittiesattack me and my cousins loved Grease. This is one that i personally wouldn’t mind - the slightly dodgy bits go straight over kids heads... I never understood why Rizzo being pregnant was an issue... and didn’t know what “the chicks will cream”
Meant at the time

Thing is, I'm reading most of these thinking, 'what's wrong with that (Look Who's Talking, Carry On films, etc)?

Maybe we censor too much?

100PercentThatBitch · 20/10/2019 00:03

They did do a remake with Katie Holmes it wasn't a hit

GVROM · 20/10/2019 00:04

When I was 10 my super Catholic mother made me watch The Exorcist in a bid to put me off ouija boards (didn't even know what one was until I watched it). (Also, she was the world's shittest Catholic)

My dad once put Rita, Sue, and Bob Too on to keep me entertained (around the age of 10, again) He also used to let me watch Harry Enfield and Chums when my sister and I went to visit him. I'm still quite fond of Kathy Burke now.

Thetruth02 · 20/10/2019 00:04

@awrite - I agree with you on some of thrse... but seriously wish you were here... I’d feel slightly cringe watching it with dh

Thetruth02 · 20/10/2019 00:05

@GVROM oh I used to love Harry Enfield! Wayne and Waynetta!

Awrite · 20/10/2019 00:07

Aye, I have to admit Wish You Were Here is a Pink Floyd song to me. Haven't seen the film.

I remember Look Who's Talking as being a kind of children's film though.

GVROM · 20/10/2019 00:07

@thetruth02 me too! Sometimes I watch them again on YouTube. Perry coming back from Manchester still gets me! And Kevin cleaning the car.

YouTheCat · 20/10/2019 00:07

When I was about 12 I watched '10' with my mum. It is absolutely hilarious but definitely not appropriate for a 12 year old as it's an 18, I think.

My mum took me and my brothers to the cinema (brothers aged 6 and me aged 8) to see Grease and it was no big deal. We were frequently allowed to watch stuff slightly above the recommended age - all the Mel Brooks films and Monty Python.

freddiemercury · 20/10/2019 00:09

Salem's lot aged about 10... terrifying

FedUpMum40 · 20/10/2019 00:09

Child's play, my mum still denies letting me watch it to this day, I was 8

PumpkinKing · 20/10/2019 00:11

I watched The Ring when I was 15 at my then-boyfriend's house. I actually got my DF to remove my TV from my room for a while Blush

DontMakeMeShushYou · 20/10/2019 00:11

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane when I was about 9/10.

Thetruth02 · 20/10/2019 00:12

God another one (and hope my dm isn’t on here as probably is outing)... I remember going on holiday and forgot my books so dad lent me his... it was Alive (the story of the football team that crashed in the Andes and ended up eating the flesh of their dead friends to survive). I loved it... I reckon o was about 8... it’s still one of li favourite books (I’m a weirdo!)

@GVROM just a heads up - all series are now ok Netflix Grin

Thetruth02 · 20/10/2019 00:14

Oh and I also remember having nightmares over a strang e film where Jeff goldblum was the devil

ViciousJackdaw · 20/10/2019 00:15

I can also remember watching the TV series 'The Life and Loves of a She-Devil' with DM when I was 10 or 11. It wasn't even gory, sweary or sexy but re-watching it recently, I'm quite surprised it didn't freak the living daylights out of tweenaged me!

PumpkinKing · 20/10/2019 00:16

Perry coming back from Manchester still gets me!

Haha I love that one. And his accent changes back the minute Kevin's mum walks into the room. "Thank you Mrs Patterson" Grin I love when Wayne & Waynetta win the lottery. My DF and I still quote that. "Jeeves what what what"

GVROM · 20/10/2019 00:16

Oh really? Brilliant! It was so ridiculous but I loved it!

IamMoana · 20/10/2019 00:17

Beetlejuice (sp) messed with me for a long time!
