... to be irritated by pet owners going on about fireworks given the impact that people having pets has on society and the environment?

It's just about time for the annual whingefest about people setting off fireworks to start and it's boring. If you own a domestic animal then your animal impacts on people around you all year round in terms of waste, meat production, safety, sanitation and noise. It also impacts on wildlife.

Given that, and given that no one is obliged to own another living creature, it's a bit much to expect all the other humans around you to refrain from doing something they enjoy because it might make your dog unhappy.

Tbh there are sound environmental reasons for opposition to fireworks but they don't do even half as much damage to wild creatures and their habitats as the average cat or dog, so that's a moot point anyway and obviously not of great concern to you otherwise you wouldn't own a dog.

So AIBU to say give it a rest?

And YABU !

CoolCarrie · 20/10/2019 00:12

I think you will have a difficult job getting people to give up fireworks, but they should only be in organised displays.

Could you let me know how, please? My chinchilla lives in a cage in my home office. He doesn't make noise, he eats pellets made of timothy grass, his poop is used to compost my own garden. I fail to see how he impacts on anyones safety or wildlife. He is very afraid of fireworks though.

I'm against fireworks because innocent bystanders get hurt by them every year. They are explosives, very alike weapons. That is not ok for people to play with.

My cats were terrified of fireworks, they'd cower and try to almost get underneath us when the bangs were going off outside.

The advice is to keep pets indoors and whilst I agree with that in theory, a cat who is used to going out may stay out and be hiding somewhere outdoors.

For all that, I wouldn't ban fireworks. People seem to like them (I can take or leave). Folks just need to be careful with fireworks.

I have honestly never heard before this thread that pets are bad for the environment. They can hardly be worse for the environment than wild animals or farm animals (methane), and no one is going to ban those. Chill! You don't have to like pets but they are good company and quite relaxing at times.

Glad you point out that pets impact on wildlife, it's good to hear that you are concerned. In which case I presume you won't be having any fireworks because of the distress they cause to wild animals.

LemonPrism · 20/10/2019 01:06

Ah yes, because disliking giant fireballs that terrify animals is akin to them existing and shitting in public Hmm

I remember when I was 11 a news story of teenagers tying fireworks to a dog and setting them off. The dog exploded.

You should need a permit.

motherheroic · 20/10/2019 01:14

Just say you don't like cats/dogs and go.

BadSun · 20/10/2019 01:34

What if the dog is a rescue dog? Then my ownership of said dog has no net impact on the environment, waste, noise, meat production, etc. does it?

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/10/2019 01:37

Five dogs, none of them scared of fireworks.

Still want fireworks sales banned to the general public, only allowed at official displays at venues where the display time is published everywhere several weeks in advance.

Then they can be as loud as fuck and those who find them frightening have plenty of opportunity to avoid them.

Those who enjoy them can partake.

Fireworks cause TERROR to far more than just domestic pets, domestic pets are the tip of the iceberg and its really easy to play down their suffering 'ah well its just a dog so fuck it who cares if its shitting itself in fear for several weeks each year...'

Fireworks cause terror to wildlife, domestic animals other than cats and dogs, they cause panic, fires and death to these as well.

They also cause distress and suffering to humans with PTSD, sensory disorders, anxiety..

But lets ignore ALL that ... and just suggest that those wanting their sales and use controlled are being snowflakes who wuv their nasty stinky bitey doggoes more than anything else. Tis so very much easier isn't it.

Helmlover1 · 20/10/2019 01:43

So what do you suggest we do with all of our pets then (which incidentally most of us view as family)? Give them away to animal shelters? The impact on the environment, waste, noise, meat production etc would be the same. So then what? I’m sorry but complaining about kids setting off fireworks and endangering the public and being a responsible pet owner are 2 completely different things.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/10/2019 02:22

Bad for wildlife, a waste of resources, noisy, potentially very dangerous.

Yep, both pets and fireworks got that bill

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/10/2019 02:26

Helm obviously we could simply put them to sleep.

But as some people would kick off about that, we could just ban new pets from being bred and sold. Exceptions obviously could be made if necessary.

MaPaSpa · 20/10/2019 02:32

the rise in people owning cats/dogs decimated our local robin population. I used to wake up to birds regularly outside my windows, now nothing.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 20/10/2019 02:37

I hate fireworks for domestic sale. Fuck all to do with my cats who aren't bothered in the slightest

Seahorseshoe · 20/10/2019 03:03

I'm not a dog lover, can't bear them if I'm honest. But I do really like my neighbour and her dog being distressed, distresses her. So I don't do fireworks in my garden any more.

I've never heard of the environmental reason for not owning pets. It'll be extended to children next Hmm.

OkPedro · 20/10/2019 03:14

There should be a law that says dogs should be walked twice a day and not be cooped up in a tiny back garden. Where they bark whenever they hear the fuckn wind blowing..Their owners should think twice before they buy a dog and then decide they won’t walk them. Dogs barking constantly is worse than sleeping beside a snoring human

AProblemHasOccured · 20/10/2019 03:25

Agree with PPs. Many animals (not just pets) become so distressed and terrified by fireworks that they are driven to their own death. How the fuck can anyone be so void of empathy for other living, breathing, feeling creatures? Even if you weren't an animal lover, how would you possibly think this is ok? Fuck me, I despair. There are some incredibly selfish folk about.

echt · 20/10/2019 03:49

Kallyderon , your environmental argument is wank, i.e. a straw man argument.

Additionally: Surely if you love animals you wouldn't own something that kills wildlife and destroys wild habitats

The last time I looked, it was humans who destroyed the environment. As for the implied cats as killers argument, even the RSPB says it's us, not them:

www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/gardening-for-wildlife/animal-deterrents/cats-and-garden-birds/are-cats-causing-bird-declines/

You've been called a nasty piece of work, but I'm going for your arguments (sic) being thick as pig shit. Oh, and goady.

Fireworksareforchavs · 20/10/2019 03:53

It's beyond selfish to insist on setting them off in residential areas, I've had them land in my garden and all sorts. Chavs buy them and set them off from mid September until New Year. I have small children and it wakes them, but even before they came along I thought private sale fireworks were tacky, chavvy, selfish and rude.
YANBU

Hoppinggreen · 20/10/2019 04:15

None of my animals are bothered by fireworks and my children aren’t small anymore but I would still like to see them banned for sale to the public

Topseyt · 20/10/2019 04:34

Fireworks should be banned from public sale and available to licenced displays only.

That isn't just because I have two dogs, one of whom is terrified of them and the other of whom would go out and watch them! They are are explosives and are extremely dangerous. In the hands of arseholes they can be lethal.

Your post is quite goady and dickheaded.
