A labour politician has asked the House of Commons to be financially compensated for having to “work” on a Saturday 😡 I think this is a real slap to the face to all the hard working parents who work all the hours they can get to make ends meet. (Copy and pasted from the parliament.uk web site;) The basic annual salary for an MP from 1 April 2019 is £79,468. MPs also receive expenses to cover the costs of running an office, employing staff, having somewhere to live in London or their constituency, and travelling between Parliament and their constituency.
AIBU to say they should be thankful for the salary they already earn?

OP posts:

Jeeze, those twitter responses are awful. It's depressing how stupid people are.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 19/10/2019 19:16

Excellent point Groucho. Almost 70% of the posters so far have blindly accepted the OP’s word as fact, without checking the context. Certainly gives an insight as to how the country has ended up in this mess.

BristolianBangers · 19/10/2019 19:25

The MP is absolutely right, though, isn't he? Is this why the country is in the mess it's in? Because they just blithely believe whatever the read on Twitter?

And FGS it's not a race to the bottom!

Benjispruce · 19/10/2019 19:27

Just read it. No change in my opinion. Remunerate the masses who don’t earn £80k first.

PerkingFaintly · 19/10/2019 19:36

I think Bryant is wholeheartedly in agreement with you about the masses who don't earn £80K needing free childcare, Benjispruce. Smile

Passthecherrycoke · 19/10/2019 19:47

That’s a really odd thing to say though @Benjispruce because MPs forgoing their overtime payment won’t make companies like Pfizer or PWC suddenly start paying overtime Hmm

MrsMaiselsMuff · 19/10/2019 19:50

Remunerate the masses who don’t earn £80k first.

He wants everyone to benefit, whether you earn £8K or £80K. The government's so called free childcare is so underfunded that nurseries are either charging parents for extras to make up the difference, restricting the availability of the free hours, or closing down. Properly funded childcare provides positive benefits to society and business.

everythingisginandroses · 19/10/2019 19:54

Parliament does its job SHOCK Grin. I get time off in lieu for working Saturdays. Join a union. YABU.

BristolianBangers · 19/10/2019 20:03

@Benjispruce how is what he saying wrong? He said that he didn't want his colleagues with children to have a disadvantage over those that don't have any. And he's saying it should be the same in any line of work. What is the problem with that?

worstofbothworlds · 19/10/2019 20:06

@GCAcademic I don't get overtime or ToiL but we have managed to get carer pay for Saturday open days which helps.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 19/10/2019 20:07

I'm really conflicted by this. I'm a civil servant, earning less than half an MPs wage. I (theoretically) work 30 hrs a week, but actually work far more than this - it makes no odds whether it's a weekend or not. I only have childcare for the hours I expect to need it.
So I'm annoyed that someone in a (far) more comfortable position than me even dares to complain, but at the same time it's great to hear this kind of thing called out in a public forum.

Gileadisreal · 19/10/2019 20:08

If all the NHS staff across the UK were compensated for the extra hours they put in, myself included, then the whole system would collapse.

Fairyliz · 19/10/2019 20:16

Surely an MP is paid to do a job, not paid for the hours they work? So they should work to the demands of the post not set hours.
Isn’t this why they get a salary much higher than the average 9 - 5 er in recompense?

Iggly · 19/10/2019 20:20

Parliament doesn’t open on Saturdays so actually this is a reasonable request of the MP

Benjispruce · 19/10/2019 20:24

Teachers regularly work 60 hrs a week, but are paid 27. Is this MP vocal on their behalf?

saraclara · 19/10/2019 20:24

Oh for goodness' sake people. READ WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID.

You don't need to go to twitter when you can read, verbatim, what the guy actually said.

I despair.

saraclara · 19/10/2019 20:25

HE'S TALKING ABOUT CHILDCARE, NOT OVERTIME PAYMENT

Redspider1 · 19/10/2019 20:34

Do these people not have family that can care for their children on a Saturday?Thats how most people cope.

TheFairyCaravan · 19/10/2019 20:35

DS1 is working this weekend and he did last weekend. He won't get any extra pay. The reason he's doing it is because he volunteered to go away next month with another regiment, who are running at less than 65%, so he needs to be at briefings etc. If he comes back and has duties over Christmas, like last year, he won't get paid for those either.

MPs have a lot of time off. I don't know how this man has the cheek to stand up and ask this, tbh. They've had massive pay rises in comparison to the rest of the public sector. This is just another kick in the teeth and shows how self serving and entitled they are. They should be taking a long hard look at themselves and then looking at the retention and recruitment crisis right across the public sector and addressing the pay and working conditions of those people before bleating about childcare on one Saturday in 35yrs.

LadyLanka · 19/10/2019 20:41

As far as I can see, most politicians today are "career" politicians. So no time in education, business or any other kind of industry. This means the majority are looking to their salary ans an MP to live on.
Of course they are going to milk it for anything they can get. The majority have not been active in the "world of work" and think they are entitled.
I wish we could go back to the days when MPs had private incomes, or were union sponsored and stood for parliament due to civil duty and responsibility, without thinking about lining their pockets at public expense.

katmarie · 19/10/2019 20:47

Ffs. Hes not asking for money. He doesn't even have kids. Hes making the point that working parents who are required to go beyond their contracted hours should not be disadvantaged by the cost of additional childcare compared to those who dont have kids. All working parents. Not just mps. Hes using parliament being open on a saturday as a platform to advocate for more support for working parents. I'm baffled as to why anyone has a problem with that.

Benjispruce · 19/10/2019 20:49

Teachers are working every weekend.

I'm quoting this for the benefit of @TheFairyCaravan @Benjispruce @Fairyliz @MsBananaHammock @GCAcademic etc

Redspider1 · 19/10/2019 21:04

I have read the article. Yes he is not asking for himself but he is asking for other MPs with children because ‘shock, horror’ they have been asked to work outside of their paid hours.
Really?
