We are on holiday, due to fly home tomorrow. DS started to get spots on feet and hands, one next to mouth. His baby friend has hand, foot and mouth so have assumed it’s that and kept him inside. No fever and a bit grumpy but playing normally otherwise. However the spots have begun to spread rapidly and now cover his legs, his feet look appalling and quite a few on arms, tummy, nappy area etc.

What the absolute hell is it? Can we fly back like this? He has had the chickenpox jab if that’s relevant.

Definitely ask the hotel if they can contact a doctor on your behalf, they usually at least put you in touch if there's risk of such a contagious condition because they obviously don't want other guests to be exposed. Poor little thing, I hope he is ok Thanks

Midlandsmummy29 · 19/10/2019 21:32

Not a doctor but looks exactly like when my DC had HFM, they spread to arms/legs too.
Hope your little one is okay and you get home okay.

Mollymoo01 · 19/10/2019 21:37

I’m not remotely medically trained but I thought it looked like chicken pox although you say he’s had the jab so it can’t be that?

You need a DR and a fit to fly certificate.

GettingABitDesperateNow · 19/10/2019 21:45

My daughter had the worst spots around her nappy area. Doctor said it should be called hand foot mouth and genitals. She had spots all over as well.

I think you can fly with it, as you can go to school or nursery with it. I would however get something from a doctor as I had people thinking it was chicken pox or something horrific and asking me why I'd let her out

winniesanderson · 19/10/2019 21:47

I'm not medically trained but this does look very much like hand foot and mouth. Seen it at work (nursery) and both my children have had it. In both cases I was told I didn't need to keep my children off school/nursery, unless they were very unwell or had a temperature. Which I think is what it says in the spotty book. My eldest just had the one day off as I wanted her to have a chance to rest, but she was fine. My youngest was a bit more unwell with it so I kept her off for a few days.

Bloodydamnrash · 19/10/2019 21:51

Called out a doctor to our hotel who has diagnosed hand, foot and mouth and says we are absolutely ok to travel at this stage. Thank you everyone!

That's a relief then. Hope your lo is better soon.

SD1978 · 19/10/2019 23:18

Echoing HFM- the risk to adults is usually less due to them washing their hands appropriately- hence why parents of kids don't get it very often when their kids do. You do need to see a Dr regarding fit to fly status though.

SD1978 · 19/10/2019 23:23

I'd still contact the airline- the first seven days are infectious- I wouldn't want to sit beside you if I had a baby, or was immunocompromised.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 19/10/2019 23:30

We were on a return flight a year ago where a family was taken off an aircraft due to hand foot and mouth so I would check with the airline what there policy is

KindnessCrusader · 20/10/2019 09:29

I'm guessing the airline will accept a letter from a Dr?

Evilspiritgin · 20/10/2019 10:28

@KindnessCrusader not necessarily I’m sure there was a post on here recently where the airline wouldn’t let the family board even with a dr letter

Bloodydamnrash · 20/10/2019 18:18

No one said anything and we flew back because the doctor ok’d it/wrote a note and I really had to fly home m. I do however plan to keep DS home this week regardless, until the spots clear up.

I’m actually quite pissed off as the baby he caught it from‘s mother is still taking her infected child swimming tomorrow and out and about all weekend etc. Had I known this would happen or it happened at home I would have stayed at home!
