To think 60 mins+ homework at 7 is too much?

DS who is just 7 gets this much homework. 3 subjects every night apart from Wednesdays. One subject he finds harder than the others so always takes a long time. This weekend he has a science project to complete as well. He does do other out of school activities as well and the evenings now are just so long. We still haven't finished the difficult homework from yesterday and haven't even started the science project. Is this an unreasonable amount of homework at his age? We aren't in the UK btw.

Chewing I would disagree. My DC are 7 & attend private school.

They do spelling each evening (5 mins max), a bit of maths a couple of nights a week & read in bed. They get at 20 min project each week. We are told to stop after 20 mins so we never finish it.

My just turned 8 year old finishes school at 4.30 and has at least 1 hour a day, regularly more and more at the weekend. We both hate it.

But its pretty standard for private schools in France.

Appalling amount of homework.

I think the more homework dished out, the poorer the teaching standards of the school/ teachers. Obviously not capable of teaching them everything in the allotted hours, (and there are plenty of them, the kids are there every bloody weekday, often 8.30am til 3.30 or 4.pm.)

Shouldn't have ANY homework - ever - IMO. Can't see the point. They are at school for enough hours, (a place where they'd rather not be in many cases,) without lumping a load more work on the to do at home!

rainingallday · 19/10/2019 18:58

*A load more work for THEM to do at home! (not the!)

Mine is at a state primary in Spain, year 3. He gets one book to read a week and write some gumph about it (what he liked, didn't like, what he'd change etc). Takes 10 minutes to read, 10 to write (on a good day!).

That's it. Classes are 9-12.30, 3-4.30. Some children have extra curricular activities after lunch, some run around the playground. DS has sport 2 days a week after school.

His same-age cousin is at private school here and they get an A4 sheet one side writing, one side maths every night! Plus her extra curricular stuff. She's knackered and doesn't like learning.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/10/2019 19:18

Rain the Hattie stuff on homework isn’t likely to help you. While the effect size in primary was 0, it’s much more complicated than that.

Chewingbubblegum · 19/10/2019 19:38

Agatha, mine is same age as yours, at an academic focused private school and this home is standard. In fact, there's homework every day.

Chewingbubblegum · 19/10/2019 19:39

The other private schools in the vicinity are the same.

gamerwidow · 19/10/2019 19:41

Too much for a UK school. DD is 9 and we've been told if homework takes more than 30 minutes to stop and make a note that your child struggled to complete it.

Charley50 · 19/10/2019 19:50

I agree it's too much.

simplekindoflife · 19/10/2019 19:51

Way too much! Are you sure it's all actually compulsory?

sue51 · 19/10/2019 20:35

Way too much for a 7 year old.

Lifeover · 19/10/2019 21:00

Far too much, my 7 year old has one piece a week (takes about 30 min) and reading. I’d do one subject a night and tell the teacher that is the limit.

AloeVeraLynn · 19/10/2019 21:02

That's mad. It simply wouldn't get done in my house.
My 7 year old has reading and spellings. His school don't "do" homework besides that and I'm happy with their approach. I want him playing outside or with his toys after school instead of doing homework!

Booboostwo · 19/10/2019 21:05

This is far too much and the risk is that it will put him off learning.

My DD is 8yo and in a public French school. This year she has almost no homework, just a poem to learn off by heart but can take three weeks to get it done, but is encouraged to read. Last year’s teacher did give sOne homework, mainly spellings but at most there would take 15-30 minutes four times a week.

BinkyBaa · 19/10/2019 21:06

Unreasonable if he HAS to do it all.

I remember getting a lot of homework in primary school but I never did a single one until high school. As far as my parents were concerned I was doing well in class and reading enough at home.

Is he struggling in any areas? Will the homework help or is it just busy work?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/10/2019 21:07

If the OP isn’t in the UK, I’m not sure appealing to the teacher is going to help much. If it’s France, I’m not sure she’ll get anywhere.

My 14 yr old gets 3 X 30mins homework a day maximum, usually less.

That's way too much at 7. Mine used to get 2 pieces a week at that age.

waterrat · 19/10/2019 21:10

I have a 7 yr old in an outstanding rated primary and he doesn't get any homework at all ! Thank god. Kids need to be physical and have time to relax and play. The school system is overly formal from too young an age already in the UK

waterrat · 19/10/2019 21:12

Given how sedentary the UK school day is I need to get mine for a run around and they also need some time zoning out relaxing. We are ruining childhood in this country. No wonder kids are so stressed and unhappy.
