To put this money in the class kitty?

DS (8) came home from school, announced he had found £20 in the classroom, and handed it to me. I wasn’t very impressed that he didn’t hand it to his teacher, but at least he didn’t intend to keep it to himself. We’ve had a chat about not taking what doesn’t belong to us. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I sent a message to the class group (I’m pretty sure all parents are on it) and asked who it belongs to, so we can return it. No reply.

WIBU, if no one comes forward for the money, to add it to the collection for Xmas presents for teacher and TA? Or should I just send it to the teacher and ask her to deal with it?

What were the circumstances around him “finding” it?

DontLookBackIntoTheSun · 18/10/2019 17:19

Let the teacher deal with it. It’s not your money to donate

LoopyGremlin · 18/10/2019 17:20

Has the teacher been asked? That would be the most obvious person to have £20 in the classroom.

MelonSlice · 18/10/2019 17:21

It could be for a childs activity, and the child is too scared to tell the parent they've lost it, so the parent doesn't know to claim it.

RevolutionofOurTime · 18/10/2019 17:23

It was in a box where the children collect their diaries. My guess is that it fell off another kid’s diary. So I think it’s unlikely to be the teacher’s money; more likely money sent to school to buy something from the uniform shop.

Surely he would have handed it to his teacher. I cant imagine why you would automatically think it belonged to a child its much more likely to be the teacher or TA's money. I don't know many 8 year olds who take £20 to school.

BlueThursday · 18/10/2019 17:23

More than likely to be the teacher’s than s child’s

Themutts · 18/10/2019 17:24

Ask the adults in the room where your child found the money. They are more likely to have lost £20 than an 8 year old.

RevolutionofOurTime · 18/10/2019 17:25

Even if the child was too scared to report it lost, now that I’ve told all the parents, I would hope they will check with their children if they sent money to school this week!

Do people really send 8 year olds to school with £20 to buy their own uniform??

RevolutionofOurTime · 18/10/2019 17:26

Ok, I will email the teacher. Thanks

You should definitely hand it to the teacher.

RevolutionofOurTime · 18/10/2019 17:28

@SmileCheese, we’re not in the Uk ( I converted the currency) and yes they do. I’m not talking about shirts and trousers, but hats, mouth guards etc

Did you specify the amount in your message? You might find that 30+ owners come forward Grin

MonChatEstMagnifique · 18/10/2019 17:29

Give it to the teacher and let her deal with it. It's not your money to donate.

RevolutionofOurTime · 18/10/2019 17:36

@Finfintytint, yes I did. No reply whatsoever! He obviously has wealthy classmates 😁.

I’ve emailed the teacher.

He should have handed it in to a member of staff, so handing it in now would be the right thing to do.
He might even get lucky - my son found £20 at his school (hes older) and handed it in - it was never claimed and after a period if time (several months) was given to him as the finder.
