I have a bloodshot eye. It was pretty bad yesterday - very red, couldn't open very wide at all. It looks a bit better today - it's less red but still definitely bloodshot, and it opens a bit more - but it feels gritty at times and it goes through phases of being really light sensitive.

I usually wear contacts, but have worn glasses for the past two days. I can see okay as far as I know. I don't think there's anything in my eye...

Do I need to get it checked out today? I'll struggle a bit with work but I could make it...

I suffer from Dry Eye and our local hospital has an emergency dept where you ring and get an appointment there .I think GP/Opticians would probably suggest this .If it is a medical condition would need to be diagnosed by a Doctor. Dont leave it as it may become worse and more sore .Hope you feel better soon OP!

Sounds like dry eye if theres no discharge. Go to the pharmacy. If they give you the right treatment, you'll know it from the instant relief.

I had this recently, scratched from wearing contacts and then it got an infection. I went to the opticians and they sent me straight to the eye hospital where I had antibiotic drops for two weeks. The light sensitivity would concern me. I'd go to the opticians today.

Go to the opticians not a doctor. They don’t have the equipment to look at your eye/ behind your eye.

I had a similar issue. optician referred me straight to eye a&e to go immediately. I had to have check ups everyday For a week and 2 Different eye drops every other hr.

Don’t muck around with eyes.

It was uveitis. Which can be very serious and cause loss of vision

Definitely go to the optician. I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a corneal ulcer which needed urgent treatment.

Not worth taking chances with your eyes.

My husband wears contact lenses and he sometimes used wake up with the same problem OP.
He was advised by his optician that the contacts were the cause as they can 'dry' the eyeball out and to at least twice per week use eye drops, which are available at all supermarkets ( not optrex )
That was a few years back and since using the drops he hasn't had a problem.

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments. I've seen the optician, who after much light shining, diagnosed magical keratitis. A few students came in to see it, too.

I've got ointment, been reassured it's not at all to do with my contacts and been warned to go straight to the hospital if the swelling gets any worse. For tonight, I'm trying to give my eye a rest as much as I can, and I'll be off to bed soon!

Thanks again.
