Soap in the shower, odd smell

Not really an AIBU, posting for traffic and NC as a little bit of an embarrassing subject!

I read a while back that soap makes you cleaner than shower gel, so I bought imperial leather for armpit washing for my family as my teenager was complaining of washing pits but still smelling.

I know Ph wise it's not quite recommended on intimate areas but I have started to use it 'down there' to keep fresher and I've had no issues on that front otherwise.

I shower regularly and wear liners most days though I'm trying to wean myself off them as wondering if they cause more issues than they help (wearing for extra freshness but read they may cause more, well you know). I've even began with washable liners but I'm not convinced they actually do much protection wise for me.

Basically, when I use this soap in the shower down there , on the first wash there is a wafting smell of ammonia. Not so much on the second wash! Does the soap react with something? I know I don't smell otherwise and if I used shower gel this smell wouldn't come!

I also remember that when my mum and I had been swimming as a kid, we would both squeeze into the one private cubicle shower our pool offered and I remember this smell from her and myself then, I just thought back then it was a lady thing and being about 7 I did used to not wipe so probably did smell as a kid! I completely forgot this smell until it started again with me using soap.

So what I'm wondering, is this a normal soap related thing and does anyone know why or what causes it?? I'm not concerned, more curious!

OP. I actually know exactly what you mean. I get this too. Apparently the science behind it is that the oil/fat in the soap bonds to the dead skin on the first wash causing the smell but there is no dead skin left on the second pass. I have found this is most noticeable with imperial leather soap but also happens with a green and white marbled soap my Nan bought.

@DogAndCatPerson

Because some people don't quite seem to be able to cope with my post and that's without using the words DISCHARGE and VAGINA. I was trying to be as discreet as I could be in this situation. Seems no matter how well you try to get such matters across you're going to get 'hunted' if you dare to ask the things women aren't usually "supposed" to talk about if they want to be considered ladylike and clean. Sad really.

I challenge you all to but some imperial leather and see if the same happens to you.

I can't wait for the Imperial Leather Fanjo Challenge to take off on the Internet.....

ghostyslovesheets · 18/10/2019 10:35

You are missing the point spectacularly op - we don’t think it shouldn’t be spoken of - we just know it makes good wank fodder for trolls

Stop washing yourself with harsh chemicals- that might help

@MyRaGaiaStarFishPieA

So it's days and oils rather than ammonia perhaps. Interesting. I said I wasn't worried in my OP, mostly because I remember it happened to my Mum too, but I did want to be sure there isn't something medical behind it, not exactly the type of thing my elderly mother would want to discuss so can't ask her!!

Also, I have to add, because I forgot in my first post and someone's bound to ask...all family members are instructed to soap up their hands and not use the soap direct to their body so we don't have pube soap and my teenager uses a medicated anticeptic lemon soap thats supposed to be gopd for spots rather than the soap me and DH share!!

@puppyconfetti

Coconut water smells quite odd as a drink, coconut scented stuff is stronger, I can imagine that would make a strange smell later in the day once the area is warmer!! Probably the same fate and oils principal.

Yes I get that, but I guess I'm now wondering if the facts that shower gels don't cause this when I was my crotch(lovely word) with them, that maybe they arent cleansing well and that the smell with the soap is due to it cleaning properly??

Also, if some bloke wants to.oerv over me washing my fanny, he can crack on, poor love probably needs the excitement.

Some people just love to take the absolute piss out of people dont they.
OP, i dont think you should carry on using the soap if youve noticed the smell as its your bodys way of telling you that it doesnt really agree with you. If your wary of what products to use down there i would highly recommend FemFresh. Its the only product i trust and know i will feel fresh and clean after using it. Also, you dont need to go the GP GrinConfused

ChristineBaskets · 18/10/2019 10:45

Yes this is definitely a thing. Haven't had it personally because I only use soap free wash but I have smelled it when an ex washed his bits with soap and I was in the room 🤮

Morning, and thanks for the (many!) reports about this thread.

We can see that a lot of you have expressed some reservations about it but we've had a look behind the scenes and, based on the OP's posting history, we've no major reason to be concerned here.

So while the subject matter may be a bit much for some of us on a Friday morning when we're drinking coffee and eating toast, we've no problem with letting this thread run.

Cheers, all. Brew

A quick search only brought up this post Hmm or am I doing it wrong?

Weird, weird post.

thesunwillout · 18/10/2019 10:51

Fast remembering this odd soap smell, I get you.
Why it happens not sure, but the thought of lather on my fanny is making me wince.

Someone said Zest soap, remembering my grandma's Shield soap!! Now that, and the forever damp flannel in her bathroom are special scent memories 😳

The OP's name-changed for this thread. Which is fair enough!

hazeyjane · 18/10/2019 10:56

Shield!!! that's the one I'm thinking of!! Ooh it seemed very modern in my nan's avocado bathroom.

ghostyslovesheets · 18/10/2019 10:59

Pears - loved that stuff

Oddly I was allergic to Lifebuoy which made me break out in hives

MyRaGaiaStarFishPieA · 18/10/2019 10:59

It was shield soap! That's the one

22NDNC · 18/10/2019 11:05

@iamtinkabella

Do you think femfresh makes you smell fresh and clean? I bought some of the wipes when i had a lunchtime smear (showered on the morning but wnated to freshen up beforehand!) and to be blunt, I used to be a carer and the smell reminded me of elderly women who used nappoes/tena etc. maybe thats what they were washing with, or a medical version? (I was a home carer so was more involved in housework and preparing meals/giving meds rather than bathing people).

I completely understand why people troll hunted me on here but yes I'm a long time poster on many boards and wouldn't want to jeopardise my account, which was why I tried to be more discreet in my OP.
